Strategy’s STRC-fueled bitcoin buying spree is helping to drive demand but introduces sentiment-sensitive structural risks, according to K33.

Bitcoin has gained 13% since late February, outperforming equities and gold, as sustained buying supports the rally despite geopolitical tensions.
Strategy's aggressive bitcoin (BTC) accumulation, increasingly enabled by its STRC perpetual preferred stock, is introducing structural risks tied to market sentiment and pricing dynamics, according to research and brokerage firm K33.

In its latest acquisition announcement on Monday, Strategy said proceeds from at-the-market sales of STRC accounted for approximately $1.18 billion of its $1.57 billion in bitcoin purchases last week, compared to $396 million from its Class A common stock, (MSTR).

STRC is a perpetual preferred share designed to trade near $100 while offering a variable monthly dividend, currently around 11.5% annualized. The instrument allows Strategy to raise capital and convert investor demand for yield into bitcoin purchases, but its stability depends on maintaining that target price and continued market confidence, Head of Research Vetle Lunde wrote in a new report.

Lunde warned that risks extend beyond bitcoin's price. STRC holders face capped upside through dividends but potential downside during market drawdowns, with the instrument already experiencing multiple declines of 5% to 10%. If STRC trades below its target level for a prolonged period, confidence in its "return to par" dynamic could weaken, shifting its behavior from a perceived stable yield product toward a more credit-like risk profile, Lunde said.

These risks are compounded by broader dependencies in the structure, according to the report.

DeFi leaders push for more decentralized finance in US university curricula

More than 20 DeFi projects have called on U.S. universities to make decentralized finance a core part of teaching at leading business and law schools.

The projects plan to embark on a campus tour this year to support the initiative.

A coalition of over 20 decentralized finance (DeFi) projects has published an open letter calling upon U.S. universities to incorporate more DeFi and crypto education into their curricula.

The open letter is part of the "1inch Forward" campaign, led by 1inch and backed by the Blockchain Association, DeFi Education Fund, The Solana Policy Institute, Aave Labs and Dune, among others. The campaign will include a campus tour beginning at the University of Pennsylvania on March 27.

"American business and law schools have long set the global standard in higher education — and DeFi is the next frontier in maintaining that standard," the letter said, adding that student interest in DeFi education is growing. "We are not suggesting drastic changes to the curriculum. Instead, we propose a supplementary pillar, to ensure your students are familiar with decentralized technologies and their applications."

The campaign urges universities to incorporate blockchain architecture and decentralized technology courses into the core curricula of business and law schools, and to educate students on DeFi mechanisms such as automated market makers. It also calls for offering students opportunities to engage with live DeFi systems, per the letter.

The letter also said that members are prepared to help design coursework, create opportunities for students to participate in their protocols, and establish formal internship and fellowship programs.
