IMF Warns Tokenization Speeds Up Financial Risk

The International Monetary Fund said Thursday that tokenization can reduce friction in financial markets but may simultaneously introduce new risks that undermine stability. The assessment came in a 23-page report in which the IMF stated that "atomic settlement and enhanced transparency reduce some traditional risks, but speed and automation introduce new ones."

More than $27.6 billion in real-world assets, excluding stablecoins, is currently tokenized on-chain, according to RWA(dot)xyz data. Forecasts for the sector vary widely: Boston Consulting Group estimated in 2022 that the tokenization market could reach $16 trillion by 2030, while McKinsey & Co projected a more conservative $2 trillion over the same period.

Centrifuge’s announcement to expand to Base Chain, where it allowed the trading of tokenized S&P 500 as a new asset class, drove the rally. Is tokenization the main driver of CFG? Can bulls keep up with the pace?

CFG price bounces off KEY retracement level

The charts clearly showed the current bullish momentum, with CFG rallying from a low of $0.14 to a daily high of $0.172. The altcoin lost its rising trendline support on the 31st of March but seemed to have ended the correction phase.

CFG bounced off the zone between 0.618 and 0.786 Fibonacci Retracement levels. To be specific, the altcoin respected the optimal zone at the 0.75 Fib level but seems to be seeing rejection around $0.17.

Holding through the premium zone, which is above the 0.5 Fib level, the altcoin increases the potential to hit $0.1857. However, this zone has sparked bearish reversals three times as CFG makes the fourth attempt.

Interestingly, bulls are showing strength, though it’s weak. The MACD lines have had a crossover confirming a short-term trend shift in the altcoin’s price action.

That puts $0.1857 as a potential reversal zone unless bulls can gather enough momentum past the resistance. This resistance zone was 18% away from $0.1561, which was a discount area considering the rally that started on the 23rd of March.

Growth in Centrifuge’s TVL, revenue, and holders

As Centrifuge continued to expand its chain, its Total Value Locked (TVL), revenue, and number of holders followed suit.

As name-by-name divergence deepens in the altcoin (crypto assets other than Bitcoin) market, a structural downtrend has compounded the weakness, with more than 40% of all tokens found to be at or near all-time lows.

According to on-chain analytics platform CryptoQuant on the 4th, more than 40% of all altcoins were tallied as having reached or being close to their all-time lows. That exceeds the roughly 38% recorded in the previous bear market. The market is increasingly viewing the broad erosion of individual altcoins' downside resilience as becoming structurally entrenched.

For the unfamiliar, wrapped Bitcoin tokens allow users to leverage lending, borrowing, and other DeFi activity across Ethereum and other chains.

Will Circle’s wrapped Bitcoin benefit from trust?

It’s worth noting, however, that the wrapped Bitcoin segment has been plagued by trust issues. In August 2024, the top contender in space, BitGo’s WBTC, faced community backlash. This was after it partnered with Justin Sun’s BiT Global.

The deal with BiT Global allowed Justin Sun access to the BTC in cold storage, used as collateral to back WBTC. This unsettled some investors and triggered some outflows at that time.

Sensing the distrust and vacuum created, Coinbase seized the opportunity. It quickly unveiled cbBTC, its rival product. It was an instant success. In just two months, it crossed $1B in market cap. In the last two years, the cbBTC market supply has grown to $6B, underscoring a strong demand.

However, it wasn’t long before Coinbase also faced community scrutiny over a lack of verifiable reserves backing cbBTC. Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong’s response further alienated the community. He said,

As for cbBTC, yes, you’re trusting a centralized custodian to store the underlying BTC – we’ve never claimed otherwise.

The exchange eventually curved and posted proof of reserves for its product. However, the distrust lingered.

And, it seems Circle is betting on this. For Circle’s CEO,Jeremy Allaire, cirBTC will be a ‘neutral’ on-chain asset.

Whale flows drive market tension

Recent on-chain data highlights the scale of this back-and-forth. Approximately 488,599 $HYPE, valued at $17.18 million at the time, moved from FalconX to a newly created wallet.

Transfers of this nature-out of exchanges and into private wallets-typically point to a longer-term holding strategy, as they reduce immediate sell-side liquidity. In isolation, the move leans bullish.

However, the transaction followed closely behind a sizeable sell-off of roughly 450,000 $HYPE, worth $15.52 million, executed within a similar window.

While the inflow marginally outweighs the outflow, the proximity of both transactions underscores the indecision among large holders.

Such visibility into whale positioning often shapes broader market behavior. Traders tend to mirror these flows, amplifying short-term volatility as liquidity shifts rapidly between buying and selling pressure.

The accumulation trend holds

Despite the recent sell-side activity, underlying data suggests that accumulation remains intact.

Persistent Selling Activity Weighs on Bitcoin

While the Bitcoin price is moving sideways, investors are steadily reacting negatively to the performance. During the period of indecision, selling pressure is persistently building underneath the surface, suggesting growing uncertainty among investors.

According to the report from CryptoQuant, a leading on-chain data analytics platform, the selling pressure is being driven by major BTC players rather than retail holders. The constant distribution from key market players raises the possibility that underlying sentiment is more brittle than it seems.

CryptoQuant’s report began with the Bitcoin Spot Demand, which remains in deep contraction despite accelerating Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) and Strategy purchases. After examining the 30-day apparent demand, the platform highlighted that the chart is showing a positioning at -63,000 BTC, indicating that broader market selling pressure is still outweighing institutional accumulation.

At the same time, large Bitcoin investors or whales holding between 1,000 BTC and 10,000 BTC have turned net distributors. This wave of selling is indicated on the 1-year change in whale holdings, which has declined from +200,000 BTC to -188,000 BTC today.
