Donald Trump has nominated Michelle Steel, a former Republican congresswoman from California, to serve as the United States ambassador to South Korea a diplomatic post that has remained vacant throughout his second term despite the country's standing as one of America's closest strategic allies in Asia. The White House formally announced the nomination on Monday, though it must still receive congressional approval before Steel can take office. South Korea's presidential office responded positively on Tuesday, expressing hope that Steel, once officially appointed, would help deepen bilateral relations and foster stronger people-to-people ties between the two nations.In the interim, senior State Department official Kevin Kim has been fulfilling the role of acting ambassador since October of last year. He stepped into the position shortly before Trump's visit to South Korea. The most recent Senate-confirmed ambassador to Seoul was Philip Goldberg, who was appointed under former President Joe Biden. Steel, a Korean-American born in Seoul, brings a unique personal connection to the role. A two-term representative for California's Orange County, she narrowly lost her 2024 reelection bid to Democrat Derek Tran, a Vietnamese-American challenger. The competitive congressional race between the two Asian-American candidates drew national attention and controversy, with both campaigns trading accusations of red-baiting tactics. Her nomination is widely seen as a symbolic and strategic move, given her Korean heritage and longstanding ties to the Korean-American community. If confirmed, Steel would be the first Korean-American to hold the U.S. ambassadorship

Former CFTC Chair Chris Giancarlo goes full-time as a tech and crypto advisor
Giancarlo, who earned the nickname “Crypto Dad” while serving as CFTC chairman between 2017 and 2019, most recently served as senior counsel at white-shoe law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

Crypto Dad has advised several firms since leaving public office, including Polymarket and Paxos.

Former Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Chris Giancarlo is retiring from law to go full-time as a corporate crypto and tech advisor. The former regulator, who earned the nickname "Crypto Dad" while in office, most recently served as senior counsel at white-shoe law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

"From here on, I’ll devote my time to advising founders & builders of #FinTech & #DigitalAssets and their CEOs and boards, research & writing on public policy issues, and continuing work with non-profit programs such as @Digital_Dollar_ Project, the Mike Gill Memorial Society and other philanthropy," Giancarlo said in a message on X. 

Giancarlo, who served as the CFTC lead from 2017 to 2019, was known for his largely proactive and positive approach to crypto regulation at a time when federal authorities were largely ambivalent or skeptical about the burgeoning sector.

As CFTC Chair, Giancarlo oversaw the launch of the world's first federally regulated Bitcoin futures markets, allowing self-certification of BTC derivatives by CME Group and Cboe Futures Exchange. He also established LabCFTC, the agency’s innovation unit.

Since serving in the CFTC, which he joined as a commissioner in 2014 with an appointment by then-President Barack Obama, Giancarlo has advocated for the establishment of a "Digital Dollar," a tokenized, digital form of the greenback issued directly by the Federal Reserve.

'Sports is the entry point, not the endgame': Bernstein projects prediction market sector to reach $1 trillion in annual volume by 2030
Analysts at Bernstein expect prediction market volumes to scale from around $51 billion in 2025 to $1 trillion by 2030, driven by regulatory clarity and mainstream distribution partnerships.

The analysts see “asymmetric upside” for Robinhood from prediction market growth, setting a $130 price target for the stock.
As prediction markets evolve into broader information markets across sports, economics, politics, and culture, analysts at research and brokerage firm Bernstein have projected the sector to reach $1 trillion in annual volume by 2030, citing regulatory clarity, mainstream distribution partnerships, and a structural liquidity edge over traditional gaming markets.

Prediction markets generated around $51 billion in volume during 2025, the analysts led by Gautam Chhugani highlighted in a Tuesday note to clients, tripling year over year as liquidity rotated from the 2024 U.S. election cycle toward sports, crypto, macro, and political contracts.

"Increasing regulatory clarity at the federal level (vs. state-regulated traditional frameworks) is expanding the addressable market, while blockchain-based tokenization and integration with crypto markets is enabling global liquidity, long-tail event creation and participation from institutions," the analysts said.

Despite state-level scrutiny in recent months, particularly surrounding sports event contracts, the CFTC has asserted that it holds "exclusive jurisdiction" over prediction markets and is seeking to write rules as the industry expands. 

Kalshi and Polymarket have already executed a combined $60 billion in volume so far this year, with the analysts expecting $240 billion in 2026 and an 80% compound annual growth rate through the end of 2030.
