Ethereum Privacy Upgrade: Inside the Plan to Build Privacy Into the Protocol
Key Insights:
The Ethereum privacy upgrade builds infrastructure for private apps, but it doesn’t make ETH transfers private by default.
Only 1 of 66 Hegotá proposals is confirmed, but the privacy trio (EIP-8141, 8250, 8272) is still under review.
Ethereum’s next major network upgrade, Hegotá, is still being reviewed. Of the 66 proposals, only 1 has been officially scheduled. The rest, including three proposals aimed at providing better support for privacy applications on Ethereum, are also being reviewed.
That matters a lot because, on Ethereum, wallet addresses and transaction details are visible on its public ledger. Anyone can check a wallet’s balance or track its transaction history. This can be a serious issue for a business or corporation managing payroll or treasury funds.
Until now, developers were building privacy tools on top of Ethereum to overcome these issues. The privacy proposals that are considered for Hegotá would bring some of these features directly into Ethereum’s base protocol.
