Bitcoin price has limited downside, likely near bottom, contrarian indicator suggests

If you’re wondering just how much lower bitcoin BTC$62,272.98 is likely to drop, the answer, at least according to one historically accurate contrarian indicator, is not much.

That's the conclusion from an indicator that might seem to signal a bearish shift in sentiment but has tended to presage a more bullish outlook.

The indicator is based on two moving averages: Bitcoin’s 50-week simple moving average (SMA) and the 100-week average. The 50-week average, representing roughly one year, is very close to dropping below the 100-week line. A shorter-term measure is often seen as a more accurate reflection of recent attitudes, so the cross would trigger what analysts call a "bear cross." At current trajectories, it could happen as soon as next week.

While that might sound scary to bulls, it is potentially positive news.

There have been three such bear crosses in bitcoin's history, and each marked a market bottom, signaling the end of a decline and the beginning of a three-year rally. The impending cross, therefore, suggests the bear market has nearly run its course and the bottom is near.

Critics would argue that three past instances aren't enough to draw a definite conclusion. While that is true, the contrarian record of the bear cross is consistent with the reputation of ultra-long-duration moving averages as "lagging" indicators.

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is facing intensifying industry criticism over its financial management and organizational strategy, with prominent figures in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space questioning the foundation’s ability to sustain core development operations.

Industry leaders question EF’s financial stewardship

Marc Zeller, founder of the Aave governance group Aave Chan Initiative (ACI), publicly criticized the EF on X, arguing that the foundation could have been operated efficiently with basic budgeting principles. Zeller suggested that the EF should have used its substantial ETH reserves as collateral to generate yield, funding only high-impact projects rather than what he described as “52 clients that nobody uses or meetups in Lesotho.” He further noted that after the delayed transition to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), the EF could have staked its vast ETH holdings to generate returns sufficient to fund operations indefinitely. “If the EF hits a wall, it doesn’t deserve help. Ethereum will be fine though,” Zeller concluded, signaling a lack of confidence in the foundation’s leadership.

Keyring Network founder Alex McPharlane added that financial management and DeFi were treated as “taboo subjects” within the EF, where employees focused on financial concerns were viewed as not prioritizing the broader mission. “Now the funding shortage is a reality,” McPharlane stated. He estimated that the EF holds between $500 million and $900 million in liquid assets, which he argued should be more than sufficient to cover an annual budget of $20 million to $30 million. He characterized the inability to manage these resources effectively as “incompetent.”

Galaxy Research reports that net outflows of $6.35 billion over the past 30 days have caused U.S. spot Bitcoin [BTC] ETFs to record their worst monthly performance since their inception.This number is the highest of all 582 rolling 30-day periods that the firm tracks, highlighting a notable exodus of institutional capital from Bitcoin investment products.

If the trend continues, such prolonged outflows could lessen the short-term demand support for Bitcoin prices. Needless to say, these outflows usually indicate waning investor sentiment, profit-taking, or a more general shift toward risk-off positioning.

During these 30 days, BlackRock’s IBIT experienced the biggest outflows, totaling $4.51 billion, making it the loser of the month. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT, on the other hand, saw $1.25 billion in inflows after winning in these 30 days.

While this happened, Bitcoin’s price dropped from about $76K in early May to $64K at the time of publication.

Solana [$SOL] rebounded above the $70 mark with price up by about 2% in the past 24 hours at press time, amidst a wider market recovery. Notably, the daily trading volume was up more than 20% to around $2.20 billion.

Solana’s rally began late last week after a TD Sequential buy signal, lifting the price about 8% from $68 to $74. However, momentum now appears to be shifting on shorter timeframes.

As the price of Solana rises above $70, it encounters a heavy resistance at $75, which could be a hurdle to this recovery.

Moreover, the TD Sequential has flashed sell on the 4-hour timeframe as it tests its resistance trendline. The resistance is coinciding with the 200 SMA, showing its a strong area of supply. As such, it could suggest that $SOL is about to undergo a minor pullback to $72 or even lower levels.However, $SOL remains structurallybullish in the near-term. In fact, Solana was showing more strength than Ethereum [ETH], explaining why its Solana ETFs inflows and network activity remain strong contrary to what the charts could do.Looking at Solana Spot ETFs flows in the last week, the net inflows were more than $7.11 million. The shift from negative readings of $2.54 million to positive aligned with the price jump.

This was an indication that $SOL ETFs inflows play a part in influencing its movement as they represent capital flows into and out of the ecosystem.In addition to that, Solana network activity was accelerating each day. Its daily chain transactions have doubled since January, expanding from 60 million to 120 million.Therefore, gauging the current price outlook with the strong metrics, Solana may reset to gain strength to break past the near-term resistance.
