BTC Prophet: 20-Day 380 Million HTX Challenge

An attacker drained roughly $7.5 million from the JaredFromSubway MEV bot, one of Ethereum’s most active sandwich-attack systems, after tricking it into approving token spending it never should have granted.

Security firm Blockaid, which flagged the incident, said the bot was not hit by a smart-contract bug, a phishing attack, or a private-key leak. Instead, the attacker turned the bot’s own profit-seeking logic against it.

How the MEV Bot was Tricked

The JaredFromSubway MEV bot runs an automated strategy that scans Ethereum’s mempool for profitable trades. The practice is known as maximal extractable value.

The bot front-runs and back-runs other trades to capture the price difference, a tactic called a sandwich attack.

It became infamous in April 2023. In one day, it burned over $1 million in gas, nearly 8% of all Ethereum gas spending.

The attacker spent weeks deploying 66 counterfeit token contracts. The fakes imitated Wrapped Ether (WETH), USD Coin (USDC), and Tether (USDT).

To the bot, these contracts looked like the routes it was built to chase. It took the bait and approved spending to attacker-controlled helper contracts. One approval alone handed over more than 92 WETH.

A final contract then used those open allowances to sweep real funds from the bot.

Franklin Templeton ETF Trust has amended its existing Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registration framework to add two proposed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that would combine U.S. equity exposure with a predetermined methodology for allocating bitcoin through dividend reinvestment.

The June 18 filing outlines the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF and the Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF.

Both products are designed to track indexes developed by VettaFi, an index provider and financial data company. The indexes begin with a 95% allocation to equities and a 5% allocation to bitcoin exposure, while within the index methodology, dividend proceeds are systematically directed into bitcoin-related investments.

For both products, the filing states:

“The underlying index includes an allocation to bitcoin that is achieved by systematically reinvesting dividends from the equity securities in the underlying index into bitcoin.”

Gauging whether momentum still holds means tracking the key venues where traders act. Spot exchange netflow alongside U.S. spot ETF flows stand out as two important proxies for that read.

Spot netflow across centralized exchanges over the past seven days shows a net buy, with around $234.75 million in buy netflow. That demand pushed total Bitcoin purchases over the same stretch to $9.36 billion.

The U.S. market tells a more bearish story, where total netflow leaned toward selling. Investors there recorded a sell netflow of roughly $226.84 million, confirming that seller dominance persists.

Until clearer bullish demand emerges across multiple fronts, Bitcoin may stay subdued in the near term.

For Bitcoin treasury companies, the financing structure now matters as much as the size of the Bitcoin stack.

That test sharpened this week after Capital B said shareholders approved all resolutions at its June 17 annual ordinary and extraordinary general meeting, including authority for up to EUR 5 billion in nominal capital increases and EUR 100 billion in nominal credit instruments tied to its Bitcoin treasury strategy.

One day earlier, $BTC AB opened the subscription period for a Class A preference-share rights issue that could raise about SEK 23.4 million before costs if fully subscribed.

Both companies tie the activity to the execution of the Bitcoin treasury. Investors now have to judge which capital structures they will tolerate as those companies try to raise, borrow, and dilute their way toward higher Bitcoin per fully diluted share.

A controversial proposal surged to tackle the problem of Ethereum's joint infrastructure funding, which has been handled by the Ethereum Foundation or interested third parties until now.

Clément Lesaege, founder of Kleros and Proof of Humanity, argues that validators should be the ones taking the burden of these expenses, proposing establishing a redirect rate at the protocol level. This would allow them to direct part of their staking income to organizations managing these funds to collaborate with the Ethereum ecosystem.The proposal can be interpreted as a semi-voluntary expense: it would only activate if the majority of validators agree to implement it, but it turns mandatory for all validators in the Ethereum network after that point.

The recipients of these funds, and the percentage they receive, up to a maximum of 10%, can be set by validators at any point.

Lesaege stresses that a measure like this is fundamental to tackle the "free rider problem," which consists of individuals and institutions piggybacking on the investments of others to take advantage of joint infrastructure and improvements.

"Successfully coordinating shared investment is essential to compete with both traditional economic systems that use coercive measures like taxation to reduce their deadweight loss and corporations that reinvest earnings back into future growth," he stressed
