CryptoQuant's Network Activity Index measures transaction volume, the number of active addresses, and block usage.

Historically, a break of the 365-day moving average has typically signaled the start of a sustained Bitcoin bull market. This occurred in late 2024 and briefly recurred in April 2025, both events heralding a price increase. Now, the index has reentered this range for the first time in over a year, with the average number of transactions per block hovering near historical highs for several weeks, which CryptoQuant describes as a structural rather than temporary change.

Accumulated data also confirms this signal. Long-term holders, the so-called HODL (Hold/Deposit) group, currently hold over 4.37 million bitcoins, up from approximately 2 million at the beginning of 2024.

 This means that a significant portion of the illiquid supply is locked up, historically leading to a narrowing of circulation before the price recovers. VanEck's analysis shows that approximately 43% of Bitcoin has been idle for more than three years, a historically high rate.

However, it's important to note that, as CryptoQuant points out, "the economic significance of these transactions differs significantly from previous periods of high activity." Transactions under 0.01 BTC (equivalent to approximately $630 at current prices) currently account for approximately 80% of daily transactions on the blockchain, up from 44% in 2023.

The sharp rise in transactions under 0.001 BTC and under 0.01 BTC is almost entirely driven by OP_RETURN-based protocols such as Runes, Ordinals, BRC-20 tokens, and data timestamping services.

From current levels, that base case alone represents nearly a 2x to almost 3x move.
