Next bull run will be slower, less volatile as investors' crypto appetite evolves, Bitwise CIO says

Any recovery in the crypto market is likely to take longer than traders expect because Wall Street investors and advisory firms are now focusing on real-world applications, such as tokenization, and artificial intelligence rather than straight digital assets, according to Matt Hougan, the chief investment officer of asset-management company Bitwise.

“We've lost the attention of investors to other hot trends,” most notably, for now, AI, Hougan said in an interview over email. "I think the coming bull market will be slower and less volatile [than] in the past.”

Even so, firms that advise high-net-worth individuals and institutional capital, known in the U.S. as registered investment advisors (RIAs), remain highly engaged with bitcoin BTC$64,115.53, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, and crypto overall.

“Interest is as high as it's ever been,” said Hougan, himself a long-time bitcoin bull. “I think that's a very bullish long-term signal. … I think it's going north of $1 million in the next 10 years. I have less certainty around how, when or if it has bottomed. I think we have to wait to see how the four-year cycle plays out.”

With multiple, often conflicting, signals identifying where the slide in bitcoin might end, the price remains almost 50% below the record high it hit in October. It's down 26% this year, and the broader market gauge CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20) has lost 34%. Blockchains associated with tokenization, such as Stellar, have also been hit, though Stellar's lumen (XLM) coin stands out with a gain of 8.9% this year.

Strategy's STRC preferred stock hits a record low below par

A preferred stock that Strategy (MSTR) uses to help fund its bitcoin buying has fallen to a record low, constricting one of the company's funding channels.

Strategy's Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, known as STRC, closed at $89 on Wednesday, its lowest level since it launched in July 2025.

That is about 11% below the roughly $100 the stock is designed to hold. A preferred stock is a class of equity that pays a fixed dividend and ranks ahead of common shares in payout order. STRC pays a variable dividend, currently at an effective rate of 12.9%, adjusted monthly to keep its price near $100.

Traders keep track of this discount because of how Strategy uses the stock.

When STRC trades above its $100 par, the company issues new shares through an at-the-market program, selling stock straight into the market, and uses the cash to buy bitcoin. With the stock now below par, Strategy has paused that program, removing one of the levers it relies on to keep accumulating. STRC is typically the most actively traded of its preferred shares.

The slide also lands on a sensitive instrument. STRC's dividends prompted Strategy to sell bitcoin for the first time since it began accumulating bitcoin in 2022. The company disclosed on June 1 that it had sold 32 coins for about $2.5 million in late May to fund STRC distributions, a move that rattled a market used to Chairman Michael Saylor's pledge never to sell.

Last week, Strategy said it had grown a dedicated U.S. dollar reserve to $1.1 billion to cover preferred dividends and debt, while still buying 1,587 bitcoin through separate sales of its common stock.

Strategy holds about 846,842 bitcoin, roughly 4% of the supply that will ever exist, making it the largest corporate holder.

He said, going forward, investors are largely on their own when it comes to reading where interest rates are headed.

Bitcoin dropped to $64,535, Ethereum slipped to $1,751 and XRP fell to $1.18. The selling was calm but consistent across the board. The crypto market cap is also down by 1.61%.

Under Jerome Powell, the Fed operated with a philosophy of radical transparency. Markets received dot plots, detailed policy statements, regular press conferences and carefully worded forward guidance that allowed traders to position ahead of decisions with reasonable confidence. That era ended on Wednesday.

Warsh announced the Fed was dropping forward guidance entirely. He hinted the dot plot could be modified or eliminated. He raised the possibility of scaling back press conferences and policy statements. His message, delivered without apology, was essentially this: we will not be telling you what we plan to do next.

Rates were held steady, with all 19 Fed members agreeing not to raise. But that was the least interesting part of the afternoon.

Uncertainty and volatility are inseparable in financial markets. When the institution that sets the price of money stops telling you where that price is going, risk assets reprice downward while investors wait for clarity that may not arrive on any predictable schedule.

Warsh also confirmed inflation remains well above the Fed’s 2% target and said he intends to fix what he called five years of misses from his predecessor. Five new task forces were announced with minimal guidance on their objectives.
