Institutional selling adds to downside risk

The recent 1% reduction in corporate Bitcoin [BTC] treasuries comes amid mounting pressures, including debt obligations and persistent market weakness. While modest in size, the shift is notable given the typically long-term orientation of institutional holders.

Recent disclosures tracked by AMBCrypto showed that at least four corporate entities reduced their Bitcoin exposure between March and early April.

Mara Holdings led the sell-off, liquidating 15,133 BTC valued at over $1 billion in March. Riot Platforms and Empery Digital followed, offloading a combined 2,295 BTC worth approximately $156 million as of the 2nd of April.

Despite these sales, corporate entities still control roughly 1.16 million BTC, valued at around $77 billion. However, this sizable position is increasingly vulnerable as Bitcoin trades near the aggregate cost basis of a key long-term holder cohort—one that overlaps with institutional accumulation levels.

Long-term holder cost basis comes into focus

On-chain data from the UTXO Realized Price Age Distribution highlights a critical development. The metric tracks the average acquisition price of Bitcoin across different holding periods, offering insight into investor positioning.

Current data shows Bitcoin nearing the $63,049 cost basis for holders who accumulated between 18 months and two years ago. This level now acts as a potential inflection point.

Bitcoin and the crypto market are still in a volatile state.
Is the worst yet to come for cryptocurrencies?

Technically, the market is officially entering the second quarter. However, to understand where it's headed, we need to look back. The first quarter ended with a nearly 21% drop in total crypto market capitalization, continuing the losses of Q4 2025, when the decline was nearly 24%.

In just six months, cryptocurrencies have technically lost over $1.5 trillion. Bitcoin (BTC) also suffered losses, accounting for 60% of these outflows—a sign that it's lagging behind other volatile assets. Confirming this, the XAU/BTC ratio ended the first quarter with a nearly 40% gain, highlighting BTC's relative weakness against gold.

 In short, despite recent optimism about Bitcoin's "relative" resilience, the first quarter showed cryptocurrencies still underperforming across all asset classes. Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump's recent tweet came at a critical moment.

In it, President Trump warned of a potentially serious attack on Iranian infrastructure, putting aside expectations for a ceasefire. However, it was the timing of the tweet, more than the content, that sparked market excitement. Notably, the US stock market remains closed over the weekend, meaning the tweet temporarily prevented a cascade of liquidations.

However, the real shift in momentum occurred in oil prices. Even before the tweet, oil prices were already shaking global markets. Now, the added geopolitical risk creates even greater uncertainty. Traders and investors are likely to react as soon as the market opens, making Monday a highly volatile session for stocks.  But the spotlight is on cryptocurrencies – are they facing a major bloodbath?

The listing, however, got off to a rocky start. On its first session on the Nasdaq, CoinShares’ shares plunged roughly 25%, trading just below $8.30 at the time of writing, according to Yahoo Finance data.

Major crypto tokens such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have struggled to mount sustainable rallies during the same period, putting additional pressure on firms focused on crypto products.

CoinShares CEO Jean‐Marie Mognetti pushed back against reading too much into the market’s initial reaction. Speaking to Barron’s, he said the company’s US listing was driven by readiness rather than market convenience.

“We are not listing because the market is easy. We are listing because the business is ready, and that’s much more important,” Mognetti said, stressing the company’s long‐term strategy over short‐term share price movements.
