What is a tokenized Treasury, and why does putting one on a blockchain matter?

A US Treasury is a loan you give the US government, which promises to pay you back with interest after a set period.

Banks, pension funds, insurance companies, and governments worldwide hold trillions of dollars’ worth of them because governments have never defaulted on loans.

In that case, tokenized treasuries work like a US treasury, but using tokens that represent ownership instead of a paper certificate or digital record at a traditional bank.

Adding tokenized treasuries to a blockchain makes sense because they settle in seconds, at any time of the day, and any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. In comparison, a traditional Treasury bond settles in one to two business days.

Fund managers shift to diversification as Strategy weighs first Bitcoin sales since 2020

Institutional investors are increasingly treating crypto as a portfolio diversification tool rather than a speculative trade, according to a quarterly survey published by CoinShares Research on May 6.

The survey, which cut across 26 fund managers overseeing a combined $1.3 trillion in assets under management (AUM). It found that diversification and client demand now account for 63% of the reasons institutions allocate funds to digital assets.The report shows institutional discipline
The median allocation to digital assets remained at 1%, with a weighted average of 0.1% (skewed downward by the larger institutions in the respondent pool).

Applied across the surveyed $1.3 trillion AUM, a 1% median position implies roughly $13 billion in baseline crypto exposure across this cohort alone.

Bitcoin and Ethereum together accounted for 58% of portfolio responses. Older alternatives like Cardano and Polkadot lost ground, while DeFi-linked tokens, including Aave, Sui, and Tron, attracted stronger interest.

In a research note published in May 2026, CFRA Research analyst Nathan Schmidt noted that Coinbase’s assets under custody have climbed to $516 billion, up 95% year over year, with stablecoins and crypto derivatives driving institutional adoption.

Cryptopolitan earlier reported that the Bitwise/VettaFi advisor benchmark survey found 99% of financial advisors with crypto exposure planned to maintain or increase allocations in 2026, with 64% holding more than 2% of client portfolios in crypto.

The CoinShares report confirms that institutional behavior at the asset-management level mirrors the pattern observed at the advisor level.

Bitcoin’s post-quantum migration will be harder than Taproot and needs to start now, Project Eleven CEO says

Bitcoin’s developer community should stop waiting for certainty about quantum-computing timelines and focus on getting a post-quantum signature scheme into production, Alex Pruden, CEO of Project Eleven, told CoinDesk’s Consensus Miami conference on Wednesday.

Pruden said the asymmetry between acting now and waiting favors action.

“We added some new cryptography, we kind of built in this optionality, it turns out we didn’t need quite yet, but at least we have it,” he said, describing the worst case of moving early.

The worst case of moving late is far worse: a sufficiently capable quantum computer could derive private keys from any exposed public key using Shor’s algorithm, the 1994 algorithm that remains the canonical example of what a quantum machine can do that a classical one cannot.

Pruden valued the asset at stake at roughly $2.3 trillion.

“In a very real sense, someone with a sufficiently large and capable quantum computer kind of owns everyone’s digital assets or bitcoin for the public key that they can see,” Pruden said.

The path forward, Pruden said, is to introduce a new signature scheme into Bitcoin that does not rely on the classical math underlying the elliptic-curve digital signature algorithm, or ECDSA, it uses today.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has standardized post-quantum schemes based on hash functions and lattices, he said, and Bitcoin community discussion has trended toward the hash-based option. BIP-360, proposed last year, laid groundwork for adding a quantum-resistant Taproot output type, and Blockstream has deployed a hash-based signature scheme on its Liquid Network.

Morgan Stanley has launched cryptocurrency trading services through its online brokerage subsidiary, E-Trade.

The platform will charge a fee of approximately 0.5% per transaction. This rate is lower than those offered by competitors such as Coinbase, Robinhood, and Charles Schwab.

The service is currently in pilot phase and is expected to be available to all 8.6 million E-Trade customers by the end of the year.

Jed Finn, Head of Asset Management at Morgan Stanley, said, “The launch of this service should be seen as much more than just trading cryptocurrencies with lower fees. In a sense, it’s a strategy to disable those who are trying to eliminate intermediaries.”

In addition to Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL) is also expected to be added to the platform in the near future.
