Bitcoin traders brace for $1 billion liquidation trap after inflation shock breaks $80,000

Traders are watching whether Bitcoin can defend $78,000 after hotter US inflation data interrupted its recovery from April lows.

Bitcoin’s break below $80,000 has pushed traders toward a crowded leverage zone where a further decline could force about $1 billion of long positions out of the market.

According to CryptoSlate data, the largest cryptocurrency fell to as low as $78,725 after US inflation readings came in hotter than expected, weakening expectations that the Federal Reserve will be able to cut interest rates later this year.

As of press time, Bitcoin has recovered to $79,500, down about 2% on the day and roughly 37% below its October record above $126,000.
This price performance has left Bitcoin wedged between two closely watched liquidation levels. CoinGlass data from May 14 shows an estimated $1 billion of long positions on major exchanges could be liquidated if Bitcoin falls below $78,000. A rebound to about $80,458 would put roughly $640 million of short positions at risk.

That narrow range has become the market’s immediate battleground after inflation data interrupted Bitcoin’s recovery from April lows.

Notably, the current sell-off also coincides with softer US demand signals, outflows from spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, and renewed profit-taking by investors whose holdings returned to gains during the rally.

Toncoin price at key $2 support, can an impending golden cross trigger a rebound?
Toncoin price continued consolidating near a critical support region this week after a sharp post-breakout correction, while technical indicators suggested a potential longer-term trend reversal could still be developing.

According to data from crypto.news, Toncoin ($TON) price traded around $2.01 at press time on May 15 after briefly falling below the key psychological $2 support level earlier in the session. Despite the recent pullback, the token remains significantly above its April lows near the $1.20 region.

Toncoin’s earlier rally was fueled by renewed optimism surrounding the $TON ecosystem and improving sentiment across Telegram-linked crypto applications. Traders also continued monitoring speculation surrounding deeper blockchain integrations within Telegram’s broader ecosystem, which helped drive strong buying momentum earlier this month.

Bitcoin is struggling to reach the $84,000 level, but a minor positive is that the bulls have not allowed the price to skid to the $76,000 support.

Select major altcoins have turned down from their overhead resistance levels, indicating that the bears remain in control.

Bitcoin’s ($BTC) recovery above $82,000 on Thursday was short-lived, as bears sold at higher levels and pulled the price back to the $79,000 level. Glassnode said in its Week On-chain report that several investors bought $BTC between November 2025 and February near the $86,900 level. These holders may sell near their entry price after experiencing large drawdowns, creating a barrier for $BTC’s continued rally.

Another negative view came from crypto analytics firm CryptoQuant, which said in a recent report that $BTC has hit its major resistance at the 200-day moving average near $82,400. In 2022, $BTC had resumed its downtrend after failing to cross above the 200-day SMA. $BTC may get into trouble if history repeats itself.

In a bear phase, it is not uncommon for the price to hit a wall at the major resistance and pull back. However, a positive sign in favor of the bulls is that they have not allowed the price to dip back below the short-term breakout level of $76,000. That suggests the bulls are not hurrying to close their positions as they anticipate another leg higher.

Bhutan ‘doesn’t recall’ selling any bitcoin, disputing widely-tracked $1 billion BTC drawdownBhutan, a small Asian country nestled in the Himalayas and the second nation after El Salvador to officially mine and hold bitcoin, has reportedly been selling its stash.

In fact, according to data analytics firm Arkham Intelligence's data, the country might have sold $1 billion worth of bitcoin since July 2025.

Wallets attributed to Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), the kingdom of Bhutan’s sovereign wealth fund, have moved approximately $207 million in bitcoin out this year alone to various exchanges and trading firms, per Arkham's data.

Holdings in the Arkham-tagged wallets have dropped from roughly 13,000 $BTC in October 2024 to around 3,100 $BTC on Friday, worth $252 million as of Friday evening India time. The outflows have accelerated through 2026 to the point that Arkham estimates Bhutan will have sold all its remaining bitcoin by October if the current pace holds.
