Bitcoin’s developer community should stop waiting for certainty about quantum-computing timelines and focus on getting a post-quantum signature scheme into production, Alex Pruden, CEO of Project Eleven, told CoinDesk’s Consensus Miami conference on Wednesday.

Pruden said the asymmetry between acting now and waiting favors action.

“We added some new cryptography, we kind of built in this optionality, it turns out we didn’t need quite yet, but at least we have it,” he said, describing the worst case of moving early.

The worst case of moving late is far worse: a sufficiently capable quantum computer could derive private keys from any exposed public key using Shor’s algorithm, the 1994 algorithm that remains the canonical example of what a quantum machine can do that a classical one cannot.

Bitcoin has slipped back toward the $80,000 zone after failing to hold above $82,000, as traders reacted to technical resistance, elevated leverage, and caution ahead of fresh US economic data.

According to TradingView data, BTC/USD climbed to a local high of $82,833 on Bitstamp before giving up part of the move during Wednesday trading. 

The rally briefly accelerated after reports emerged about a possible 14-point ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran that could reopen oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Momentum weakened after US President Donald Trump questioned whether Iran would accept the proposed terms. 

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iranian approval of the deal was “perhaps a big assumption,” while warning that military action could intensify if negotiations failed.

Oil markets turned volatile alongside crypto. WTI crude fell more than 10% within hours before rebounding near $96 per barrel. 

Trading resource The Kobeissi Letter reported that nearly $1 billion in unusually large short positions had built up in WTI before the sharp decline.

Blockchain.com, a crypto wallet and exchange founded in 2011, announced the launch of SnapMarkets, a platform that lets users wager on whether bitcoin’s price will rise or fall in 30-second windows, on Wednesday.

Stakes start at $1 in what the company calls a skill-based version of prediction markets. The launch comes as prediction markets surge, with market leaders Polymarket and Kalshi seeing a combined notional trading volume close to $24 billion in April.

The market as a whole saw $29 billion in volume that month, Dune data shows. That includes event markets across categories such as sports, politics and finance.

SnapMarkets has a different offering for now. Instead of contracts tied to election results, sports outcomes or macroeconomic events, the app offers rapid-fire $BTC price calls that resolve every 30 seconds. A Blockchain.com spokesperson told CoinDesk additional market formats are planned.

The format makes SnapMarkets closer to short-term trading than traditional event forecasting. Users pick a direction, choose a stake and wait for the round to settle. Over such short windows, $BTC price moves can be difficult to forecast consistently.

Prediction markets’ regulatory backdrop

Prediction markets spent years fighting the CFTC, including Kalshi’s court battle over election contracts and Polymarket’s 2022 settlement with the agency. But the U.S. posture has changed over the past year.

The CFTC dropped its appeal in the Kalshi election-contract case in May 2025, and the agency has since turned into a former foe now giving prediction markets more tailored guidance.

That shift has opened a new fight between federal and state regulators. State gambling authorities have challenged platforms including Kalshi, Robinhood, Crypto.com, Polymarket and Coinbase, while the CFTC has moved to defend its authority over event-contract
