And that’s a much bigger issue than many people realize.
Bitcoin miners are the backbone of the network.
They validate transactions, secure the blockchain, and keep Bitcoin decentralized. In return, they earn:
• Block rewards
• Transaction fees
The problem?
Bitcoin’s block rewards are cut in half every four years through the halving process.
Over time, miners will rely more and more on transaction fees instead of newly issued BTC.
Sirer’s concern is straightforward:
What happens if transaction fees are not enough to keep miners profitable?
If miners begin shutting down operations, Bitcoin could eventually face:
⚠️ Lower network security
⚠️ Greater mining centralization
⚠️ Less participation from smaller miners
⚠️ Long-term pressure on the entire ecosystem
And signs of stress are already appearing.
According to recent estimates from :
📉 Around 15% to 20% of the global Bitcoin mining fleet may already be unprofitable.
📉 Q4 2025 was reportedly the toughest quarter for miners since the 2024 halving.
📉 Some publicly listed miners now face production costs close to $80,000 per BTC.
Older mining machines and operators with expensive electricity are feeling the pressure the most.
Sirer also suggested a possible technical solution:
A “pre-consensus layer” that could reduce congestion and improve efficiency on the Bitcoin network.
But there’s a catch.
Bitcoin’s community is famously conservative when it comes to major protocol changes. Any proposal that touches Bitcoin’s core security model usually faces strong resistance.

Some have already realized those gains. Others are watching the current $81,000 print and asking whether the next sensible move is to cash out.

That second question, what to do with crypto wealth once you’ve decided not to keep all of it in crypto, has produced a quiet pattern across this cycle. A growing share of realized profits are not flowing into other tokens, equities, or property. They are flowing into operating businesses. Service businesses, in particular.

The Profit-Taking Question
The on-chain data has been clear for several months. Long-term holder distribution accelerated through the back half of 2025, with on-chain analysts tracking sustained net selling from wallets that had been dormant for years. The retrace from October’s all-time high to current levels, a roughly 35 percent drawdown, has tested newer holders far more than it has the cohort that bought below $40,000 and is still comfortably in profit.

For that cohort, the practical question is no longer “how high does this go.” It is “what fraction of this should remain in BTC, and where does the rest go.” Cash sitting in a savings account loses to inflation. Equities are a competing risk asset. Real estate is illiquid and yield-suppressed in most major markets. The remaining option, and the one a non-trivial number of crypto holders are now choosing, is buying into or building a working business.
