Crypto fund manager probed in the suspicious death of his fiancé’s death in Zanzibar



Joe McCann, founder of crypto investment firm Asymmetric, is being probed by authorities in Tanzania, following the the alleged death by suicide of his fiancé, U.S. influencer Ashly Robinson, during a trip to Zanzibar.

Robinson, 31, a Miami-based lifestyle creator also known as Ashlee Jenae, was found unresponsive on April 9 in a private villa at luxury resort Zuri Zanzibar, where the couple had been celebrating her birthday and recent engagement. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to an NBC News report, Zanzibar police investigating the death of Robinson confirmed she died by suicide following a “misunderstanding” between the couple.

Police confirmed the couple had been involved in a heated dispute before being separated twice by hotel staff and sent to separate rooms. However, police said Robinson’s death is still being investigated and have therefore withheld McCann’s passport, according to the news outlet.

Police have questioned McCann and have asked him to remain in the country while they receive the forensic results from Ashly’s autopsy.

The hotel said it was "deeply saddened" by what happened. "Our sincerest thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and loved ones during this painful time. We are providing our full cooperation to the local authorities and the U.S. Embassy," the hotel said in a statement.

Robinson’s family, who said they doubt she died by suicide, have set up a GoFund Me page seeking to raise $50,000 to help with travel costs, arrangements and other unexpected expenses, they said. They have raised more than their target.

In an interview with Reuters, Allaire said that stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important tool in global currency competition and that this technology could support China’s goal of internationalizing the yuan.

According to Allaire, competition in the global financial system has now acquired not only an economic but also a technological dimension. In this context, the development of a yuan-backed stablecoin could make China’s currency more competitive. The Circle CEO stated that China has the potential to launch such a digital asset within the next three to five years.

These statements come amid increasing debate surrounding yuan-based stablecoins. Previously, Chinese tech giants Ant Group and JD.com were reported to have called on the central bank to allow yuan-backed stablecoins.

However, the People’s Bank of China and other regulatory bodies are taking a cautious approach in this area. A statement published in February 2026 explicitly emphasized that issuing yuan-pegged stablecoins abroad without the necessary permits is prohibited.

While cryptocurrency transactions remain banned in mainland China, Hong Kong is taking a more flexible approach. Regulators in the region recently granted stablecoin licenses to two different entities, ushering in a new era for the sector.

According to experts, stablecoins could become a significant part of international competition within the global financial system in the coming years.

Despite ECB support, the proposal is already facing political resistance. Countries such as Ireland, Luxembourg, and Malta—key hubs for crypto licensing under MiCA—are concerned that shifting authority to ESMA in Paris could weaken national regulators and reduce their influence over financial activity within their jurisdictions.

The form-filling burden is enough to deter users from using the largest cryptocurrency to pay for real-world transactions, according to the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank known for its support of free markets, limited government and individual liberty. Abolishing capital gains tax could change that, it said.

"It’s never been easier to use Bitcoin as money," Nicholas Anthony, a research fellow at the institute's Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, wrote in a report. "Yet, at the same time, the tax code puts an incredible burden on law-abiding citizens. Something as simple as buying a cup of coffee every day with Bitcoin can result in over 100 pages of tax filings."

That's because the tax system doesn't treat bitcoin as cash at the point of payment. Instead, every transaction is treated as if an asset has been sold just at that moment, triggering capital gains calculations. And the calculations aren't straightforward.

That means figuring out when the bitcoin (or fraction of bitcoin) used in the transaction was originally acquired, how much it cost and the value at the moment it was spent. The difference is then treated as a taxable capital gain or loss.

Then it gets complicated. It's quite possible the BTC was accumulated in several batches rather than a single purchase. So when you paid for the coffee, the coins could have been acquired at different times, each with its own cost basis and purchase price. Those details need to be retrieved, recorded and reported. Every time.

The headache doesn't stop there, because there is always a risk of penalty or audit in case you make a mistake in reporting.
