CFTC probes oil futures trades tied to Trump's moves in Iran: Report

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is reportedly investigating suspicious oil trades that were placed ahead of certain announcements made by the Trump administration relating to the Iran war.

According to a Bloomberg report on Wednesday, the CFTC’s probe focuses on trading activity on CME Group’s NYMEX and the Intercontinental Exchange’s futures platforms.

The regulator is also requesting “Tag 50” identity data from exchanges to assist with the investigation. Tag 50 data is widely used for auditing and regulatory compliance checks.

The investigation into the futures trading platforms comes in parallel with the rising scrutiny of insider trading in prediction markets.

Bloomberg said the CFTC is reviewing at least two instances over a two-week period in which oil trading volumes surged shortly before the Trump administration made announcements related to the Iran war.

The first of those occurred on March 23, when billions of dollars in futures traded about 15 minutes before US President Donald Trump postponed plans to strike Iranian energy infrastructure.

The second instance occurred around two weeks later, on April 7, when Trump announced a two-week ceasefire on Iran, Bloomberg said.

The trading spikes contributed to falling oil prices and rising equity prices.

“There’s enormous appetite to pursue cases like this,” said Brian Young, a partner at law firm Jones Day who previously served as director of the CFTC’s enforcement division.

Bitcoin steady as S&P 500 hits record, but options market isn't buying the peace trade


Bitcoin climbed to $74,935 in Asian hours Thursday, up 0.7% over 24 hours and 5.4% on the week, as U.S. equities closed at record highs on reports the U.S. and Iran had reached an "in principle" agreement to extend negotiations past next week's April 7 ceasefire expiry.

The S&P 500 finished up 0.8% and the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.4%, both all-time highs, capping a two-week rally from late March lows.

Ether led major tokens, up 8.1% on the week to $2,360, extending the outperformance against bitcoin that emerged earlier this week. XRP gained 3.6% to $1.41, dogecoin rose 4.8% to $0.098, and solana added 2.2% to $85.

The equity rally is running ahead of what other markets are willing to confirm. Long-end Treasury yields barely moved. Gold held near $4,800. Brent crude ticked up to $95 as the U.S. pressed ahead with a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively closed.

"Stocks are basically expressing their view that the war in the Persian Gulf is all but over," Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, wrote in a note.

Crypto's derivatives desks aren't pricing the same conviction. QCP Capital wrote in a Telegram broadcast on Wednesday that bitcoin's rally is spot-led rather than part of a broader re-risking.

Funding rates on bitcoin perpetuals are still negative and open interest has softened, suggesting shorts are leaning against the move rather than capitulating. Front-end implied volatility remains muted, one-month vol is trading below three-month, and 30-day 25-delta risk reversals still show more demand for downside protection than upside exposure.

Put simply, options markets are pricing caution even as spot rallies. The cost of bitcoin options expiring in the next few weeks is unusually calm for a real breakout, and traders are still paying

Overall, the market is at a decisive point. If Bitcoin successfully breaks above $76,000, it could lead the entire altcoin market into a new bullish phase. However, failure to break resistance may result in continued consolidation or short-term pullbacks.

LTH dominance tightens Bitcoin supply

This rotation between short-term selling and constrained supply begins to shape how Bitcoin behaves near resistance.

As the price approaches the $73,000 to $75,000 zone, STH continues circulating supply, reacting quickly to volatility, and using strength to exit positions. This keeps visible sell pressure active, especially during upward moves.

However, HODL waves reveal a deeper shift in control. Older age bands, especially 2y+ and 5y+ cohorts, continue expanding, while younger bands remain compressed. This implies Long-Term Holders (LTH) are not distributing but steadily absorbing supply over time. As a result, available liquid supply tightens, making price more sensitive to incoming demand.
