Bitcoin Miners’ AI Shift May Create New Overhang, Lekker Capital CIO Warns

Lekker Capital CIO Quinn Thompson argues on X that collapsing mining economics, combined with a growing shift by public miners toward AI and high-performance compute, could turn corporate $BTC treasuries into a fresh source of market supply.

“A large underappreciated headwind for Bitcoin is the disaster that which is mining economics. The only way this heals is through a decline in hashrate, which is being spearheaded by the AI compute first movers like CORZ, WULF, CIFR, IREN, etc.,” Thompson wrote.

The chart Thompson shared, frames the problem visually. It shows aggregate bitcoin holdings across major listed miners climbing sharply through 2024 and 2025 before rolling over in 2026. Thompson’s argument is not that the AI pivot is bearish in structural terms.

On the contrary, lower hashrate and less uneconomic competition could improve mining industry health over time. His point is that the transition itself is expensive, and that capex-heavy AI buildouts may force miners to liquidate $BTC that had previously been treated as strategic treasury.

“While helpful to long-term health and sustainability of the network economics, it presents a dilemma for prices in the near-term as Bitcoin miners hold almost 80,000 Bitcoin on their balance sheets. As these companies pivot away from $BTC mining, they 1) need capital to fund the AI buildout capex requirements and 2) have no reason to hold any $BTC on their balance sheet (not that they should have before either),” he argued.

A new report from crypto market maker Wintermute argues that the current cycle represents a fundamentally different phase for the industry.

While miners have endured downturns before, the firm says the combination of slower Bitcoin price growth, rising operating costs and weak transaction fee revenue means the traditional mining business model is under increasing strain.
Bitcoin Mining Economics Are “Breaking”, Wintermute Says

Wintermute said the current Bitcoin mining cycle — which it calls “Epoch 5” — is structurally different from previous ones, warning that the economic assumptions underpinning the sector may no longer hold.

“Peak margins this cycle are where prior cycles bottomed,” said Jasper De Maere, Wintermute’s head of research, in the report.

Bitcoin miners earn revenue through block rewards and transaction fees, while their costs are largely tied to electricity and computing hardware.

Every four years, however, the Bitcoin protocol halves the block reward — meaning miners must rely on higher Bitcoin prices or rising fees to maintain profitability.

Historically, this model worked because Bitcoin’s price surged dramatically between halvings.

The case had been Custodia Bank’s last attempt to gain access to a master account with the Federal Reserve. The court’s decision upheld previous court rulings on the Federal Reserve’s authority over its own payment infrastructure.

It appears that Custodia Bank first sought a master account in October of 2020 to gain access to central bank systems directly. A master account allows financial institutions to hold reserve accounts directly with a Federal Reserve system. This means that banks that do not have access to a master account must go through an intermediary bank to process payments. The bank argued that federal law allows state-chartered banks to access Federal Reserve services, such as a master account. The courts disagreed with this argument.

Court Ruling Reinforces Federal Reserve Authority

The law does not require the Federal Reserve to automatically approve the application of a master account, according to the ruling. The ruling reinforced the fact that the Reserve Banks have the authority to review the risks before the institutions gain access. Regulators had previously turned down Custodia Bank’s application based on the risks of the banking model, which is digital asset-focused. Regulators had previously raised concerns that crypto-related activities could potentially cause risks to the stability of the financial sector as well as the institutions. The ruling reinforced the Federal Reserve’s authority as the gatekeeper of institutions seeking access to the national payment rails.
