Whales quietly drain exchange supply as ETFs and treasuries test how Bitcoin behaves in a thinner, more fragile market.

Bitcoin has spent much of 2026 moving between recovery attempts and macro shocks, yet one part of the market has kept moving in a single direction.

Large holders have been buying.

On April 16, Bitfinex highlighted CryptoQuant data showing whales accumulated 270,000 BTC over the previous 30 days, the largest buying spree since 2013, while exchange reserves fell to their lowest level since December 2017.

That combination carries more weight than usual, pointing to a market where available supply is thinning beneath the surface, even while price remains far below the October 2025 all-time high of $126,198.

As of press time, CryptoSlate's Bitcoin data page shows BTC trading near $74,500, up 0.9% over 24 hours, 3.3% over seven days, and 0.7% over 30 days. Market capitalization stands near $1.5 trillion, and 24-hour volume is just above $41.2 billion.

Crypto Kidnapping Surge: French Probe After €3M Ransom Case


French authorities are investigating a rise in crypto-linked kidnappings after a 74-year-old man from Voiron in Isère survived a violent 16-hour abduction in January 2026. Police said attackers stormed his home and forced him to contact his son while demanding cryptocurrency, believing the family held significant digital assets.

The incident forms part of a growing pattern of organized groups targeting individuals linked to crypto through data leaks and online tracking.

As per a local report, the victim, identified as Jean, told investigators that his kidnappers assaulted him repeatedly while trying to extract access codes from his son. Authorities confirmed the group demanded €3 million before police intervention ended the case.

Rising Violence in Crypto-Linked Kidnappings

Jean told investigators that the attackers used repeated violence over several hours, including threats, forced movement, and physical assault. He said they filmed him to pressure his son into paying a ransom.

However, no payment was made after the son confirmed he did not control large crypto funds. Police later arrested three suspects aged between 19 and 23 during the operation.

Investigators said the group acted under instructions from a remote coordinator believed to be based abroad. They added that the attackers were recruited through social media and operated as low-level executors.

Moreover, authorities linked the same operational pattern to at least twenty kidnappings between 2023 and 2025, with activity increasing sharply in 2026.

U.S. spot $XRP ETFs attracted $41.64 million in just four days, marking their strongest weekly inflow since mid-January and pointing to renewed institutional demand.

Total assets reached around $1.08 billion, led by Bitwise and Franklin products.

$XRP price gained over 9% in the past week, showing that ETF-driven capital is translating into broader market momentum and strengthening sentiment toward regulated crypto exposure.

The latest figures indicate a shift in capital flows back into $XRP-linked investment products. After weeks of softer activity, spot $XRP ETFs are once again drawing consistent inflows, reflecting improving confidence among institutional investors and a more constructive backdrop for digital assets.

Spot $XRP ETFs Drive Institutional Comeback

Spot $XRP ETFs posted their largest weekly inflows since January 16, 2026. During the first four days of the week, these funds pulled in $41.64 million, reaching a 13-week high. With the final day not yet accounted for, total inflows may surpass earlier records this year.

Combined assets under management now stand near $1.08 billion. The Bitwise $XRP ETF (XRPP) led the week with $17.95 million in inflows, bringing its total assets to $313.69 million. The Franklin $XRP ETF (XRPZ) followed closely, adding $16.56 million and lifting its assets to $252.82 million.

A notable spike occurred on April 15, when daily inflows reached about $17.11 million, the highest since early February. This pattern suggests institutions increasingly prefer regulated ETF exposure rather than direct token purchases, mirroring trends previously seen in Bitcoin and Ethereum markets.

Experts say clear rules can facilitate institutional adoption, but timing remains critical.

The SEC's sweeping regulatory shift under Chairman Paul Atkins sends the clearest signal yet that America's top securities regulator has chosen cooperation over confrontation with the crypto industry—but experts say the question of whether rhetoric will translate into sustainable policy remains central to markets. 

In the first episode of the Material Matters podcast, Atkins' first official podcast, the SEC chairman championed innovation, declaring that the US must become a place "where people want to innovate, whether in cryptocurrency or elsewhere," and noting "a very important inflection point in American markets."

The first episode, released Thursday, featured Commissioners Mark Ueda and Hester Peirce, and the agency presented it as a window into its priorities for 2026.

"There's been a complete reversal of direction over the last four years," Ueda said of the Gensler-era SEC, noting that the agency has strayed from its core mandate in areas such as overseeing diversity, equity, and inclusion, greenhouse gas emissions disclosure, and supply chain management.

South Korea is kicking off a pilot that will replace government expense credit cards with blockchain‐based deposit tokens.

Blockchain Goes TradFi?
The Ministry of Finance and Economy announced on an official press release that the pilot project for the execution of national treasury funds using blockchain‐based digital currency has been approved.

This new official venture marks the second time in which South Korea’s government uses digital currency and deposit tokens for the execution of national treasury funds, following another pilot project for building electric‐vehicle charging facilities and paying national subsidies together with the Ministry of Environment.

Deposit tokens are digital claims on commercial bank deposits, issued on permissioned blockchain rails, spendable by citizens and companies at participating merchants and service providers.

In simpler words, deposit tokens are digital versions of the money already kept in a normal bank account. The bank “wraps” those deposits into tokens on a private (permissioned) blockchain, and you can then spend those tokens at approved shops or service providers, just like using a card or mobile wallet.

In contrast with Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), that are digital versions of a country’s official money, created and managed directly by its central bank, deposit tokens have programmable settlement, transparent tracking of public money, and real‐time reporting for the state.

Pilot Details
The press release states that under the current National Treasury Funds Management Act, business promotion costs and related operating expenses are required to be paid with government purchase cards, effectively blocking the use of deposit tokens.
