Asian currencies traded in a tight range on Wednesday as investors remained cautious ahead of key developments in U.S.–Iran ceasefire negotiations and upcoming economic data from Asia’s largest economies.
The U.S. dollar edged slightly higher in Asian trading after a seven-session losing streak, though overall momentum remained weak. The rebound came despite softer-than-expected U.S. inflation data, which continues to support expectations that the Federal Reserve may still have room for rate cuts later this year.
In China, the yuan held steady as markets awaited the release of first-quarter GDP figures, with economists expecting a modest rebound from the previous quarter’s softness. The Japanese yen slipped further, hovering near its weakest levels in around 18 months, as interest rate differentials continue to weigh on the currency.
Elsewhere across the region, currency moves were relatively muted:
The South Korean won was little changed as policymakers signaled continued concern over inflation risks linked to geopolitical tensions
The Australian dollar edged higher, supported by improving risk sentiment
The Indian rupee weakened slightly after softer domestic inflation data
The Singapore dollar remained stable following a modest policy tightening by the central bank
On the macro front, recent U.S. Producer Price Index data came in below expectations. While energy prices rose due to geopolitical tensions, core inflation remained contained, reinforcing optimism that inflationary pressures are gradually cooling.
However, geopolitical risks continue to shape sentiment. The U.S. military confirmed that a naval blockade against Iran is fully in effect, heightening tensions even as fragile ceasefire discussions appear to be progressing. Markets are now closely watching whether diplomacy can hold or if escalation risks return.
Overall, markets are in a holding pattern — balancing easing inflation expectations with persistent geopolitical uncertainty.

The convergence of liquidity and yield in digital finance is signaling a shift in how on-chain capital is deployed. Asset manager Wisdomtree Digital Assets published an article on social media platform X on April 13 analyzing this evolution. The firm highlighted tokenized money market funds (MMFs), including the Wisdomtree Treasury Money Market Digital Fund (WTGXX), as instruments combining accessibility with income generation.

Wisdomtree stated:

“For the first time, a regulated MMF can match stablecoin liquidity while generating income.”

The analysis emphasized that stablecoins gained dominance due to instant settlement and continuous availability. However, this advantage has resulted in large portions of capital remaining idle without yield. Institutions have historically accepted this limitation due to the absence of regulated alternatives offering comparable liquidity. This dynamic has reinforced stablecoins as the default for both movement and storage, even when capital is not actively in use.

Bitcoiners propose freezing quantum-vulnerable coins in BIP-361
Cypherpunk Jameson Lopp and five co-authors from the Bitcoin quantum security space have proposed freezing quantum-vulnerable coins on the Bitcoin network, including Satoshi’s $74 billion stash, to prevent them from being stolen once quantum computers become available.

The move is the second part of a three-stage proposal under BIP-361 called the “Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset,” which was posted as a draft to GitHub on Tuesday.

It addresses a major risk to Bitcoin — the potential use of quantum computers to steal roughly 1.7 million $BTC locked in early P2PK addresses, including Satoshi’s stash, which are not quantum-proof.

In the wrong hands, these coins could significantly undermine the value of the network.

Three phases to quantum security

BIP-361 builds on BIP-360, released in February, which proposed a soft fork for a new output type called pay-to-Merkle-root (P2MR). It works similarly to Bitcoin’s existing Taproot (P2TR) addresses but with the quantum-vulnerable key path removed.

While BIP-360 protects new coins going forward, it does not address the roughly 34% of the supply that remains vulnerable unless it is transferred to new addresses.

BIP-361 proposes that three years after activation, phase A of the proposal would prevent any new $BTC from being sent to old-style addresses, with all users on quantum-resistant address types.

The second phase (B) would invalidate old-style signatures and any Bitcoin still sitting in vulnerable addresses becomes effectively frozen five years after activation.

Phase C provides a potential rescue mechanism using zero-knowledge proofs, allowing people who missed the deadline but still have their seed phrase to recover frozen funds.
