For crypto investors wondering why they should care about fighter jets and oil tankers: the Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20% of global seaborne oil trade. When that chokepoint gets hot, everything downstream gets expensive, and “everything” includes the liquidity conditions that keep digital asset markets humming.

The strikes targeted Iranian missile launch sites and naval positions in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Since February 2026, US-Iran hostilities have escalated through a series of military confrontations, fragile ceasefires, and repeated provocations from both sides.

Pakistan had been mediating peace talks between the two nations. Those efforts now look considerably more fragile.

This cycle of escalation has already driven oil prices up more than 8% over recent months, and the latest action suggests the trend isn’t breaking anytime soon.

The crypto market responded with heightened volatility almost immediately after news of the strikes broke. Bitcoin saw notable price swings as traders recalibrated their risk exposure. In a curious subplot, $HYPE briefly surpassed Dogecoin in trading volume as capital rotated rapidly across tokens.

The broader digital asset market shifted into a risk-off posture, with cautious trading and potential liquidations characterizing the session as participants braced for more headlines out of the Middle East.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs lose $1.257 billion in a week – What’s going on?

Last week, net outflows from spot Bitcoin [$BTC] ETFs totaled $1.257 billion. The last time such a week-long outflow trend occurred was in December 2025.

On the 18th of May, Bitcoin ETFs saw outflows totaling $648.6 billion, with BlackRock’s IBIT experiencing the largest outflows at $448.4 million.

Bitwise’s BITB, Invesco’s BTCO, Franklin Templeton’s EZBC, VanEck’s HODL, and Fidelity’s FBTC were among the other asset managers that recorded outflows.

For the others, there were no flows.
Did other days of the week also record these huge outflows?

Despite a decrease in outflows on the 19th of May, the total outflows for $BTC ETFs still reached $331.1 million, wherein IBIT recorded outflows of $325.6 million.

The remaining asset managers saw no flows, while two other asset managers saw only slight outflows. A similar trend was observed on the 20th and 22nd of May, when outflows of $70.5 million and $105.2 million, respectively, were recorded.

However, on the 21st of May, only IBIT experienced outflows of $103.7 million, while ARKB was the only entity to record inflows of $2.8 million.

What is the price action telling us?

Looking at the price data, it appears that the ETFs’ outflow was what caused the price of Bitcoin to drop from $78,000 to $76,000.

However, the price managed to keep up its momentum and avoided dropping below the $75,000 support level despite this decline. The price remained stable even after US President Donald Trump’s announcement on the Iran peace agreement.

This indicated that the price decline was a passing fad rather than a long-term trend.

The fact that Bitcoin was trading at $77,383.00 at the time of writing indicates that the bullish momentum is already returning.

Thus, the size of stablecoin reserves now exceeds the foreign exchange reserves of 95 countries worldwide.

Stablecoin holdings outside the traditional banking system have surpassed the reserves of developed economies like the UK and Canada, as well as energy-exporting countries like the United Arab Emirates. Experts say this development indicates a growing shift of global capital towards digital financial infrastructures.

The growth of US dollar-backed stablecoins, in particular, reveals a rapid increase in their use as a means of payment, transfer, and storage within the crypto ecosystem. While Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC remain the largest players in the market, financial institutions and payment companies are also seen to be turning to stablecoin-based solutions.

Analysts note that the expansion in the stablecoin market is not limited to crypto investors alone, but is also creating new use cases in cross-border payment systems and digital commerce. In particular, the use of stablecoins for accessing dollars is becoming widespread in developing countries.

On the other hand, regulatory bodies are also accelerating their efforts regarding the stablecoin market. New regulatory initiatives in the US and Europe are considered to contribute to stablecoins becoming more integrated with the traditional financial system. According to experts, if the current growth trend continues, the stablecoin market could assume a more central role in the global financial system.
