Those numbers explain why the debate between these two systems matters to anyone moving money across borders.SWIFT — the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication — has been the backbone of global banking since 1973. It connects over 11,500 financial institutions across more than 200 countries and processes roughly $5 trillion in interbank value transfers every day.

The important detail most people miss: SWIFT does not actually move money. It sends payment instructions. The actual funds are shuffled between banks using nostro and vostro accounts, which tie up an estimated $27 trillion in parked liquidity before the transaction is settled.

Each hop through a correspondent bank adds time, cost, and a potential point of failure. A payment from Japan to Brazil might route through three or four intermediaries before arriving, with each one taking a fee and adding delay. SWIFT's GPI (Global Payments Innovation) system, launched in 2017, improved this. Today, nearly 60% of GPI payments are credited to beneficiaries within 30 minutes, and 100% within 24 hours. But the underlying architecture has not fundamentally changed.Ripple is a blockchain fintech company built around the $XRP Ledger (XRPL). Its core product, RippleNet, allows financial institutions to send payments directly between each other without relying on a chain of correspondent banks. The key mechanism is On-Demand Liquidity, or ODL — a term worth unpacking.Instead of pre-funding accounts in dozens of countries, a bank using ODL converts the source currency into $XRP on a crypto exchange. Those $XRP tokens move through the $XRP Ledger in 3 to 5

Furthermore, the crypto analyst pointed out that Ethereum’s derivatives market has yet to show strong conviction in its bullish traders’ behavior. “Open Interest is moving sideways: from $15.43B to $15.54B, barely +0.69%,” Alemán noted.

While this is the case, Futures CVD still points to a predominance of long positions, indicating that many participants continue to bet on a rebound. Interestingly, Alemán pointed out that Funding Rates have also remained positive since May 11, meaning long traders are paying short traders to maintain their positions.

Adding to the list, the on-chain analyst revealed that Ethereum’s cumulative Exchange Netflow also read negative, near -80,507 ETH. This means that more ETH was withdrawn from exchanges than was sent to them.

Typically, this should be a bullish sign for Ethereum price, as coins moved away from exchanges are often held for storage rather than for sale, which is typical of high net inflows. Yet, the Ethereum price failed to gain bullish strength.

Alemán mentioned that Ethereum’s current trend could only be due to more supply being available for sale relative to current demand. This causes the bullish pressure that would otherwise have risen from both spot and futures markets to be absorbed. 

The analyst concluded:

Until ETH recovers spot volume, breaks resistance, and confirms a healthy expansion in derivatives, bearish pressure is very likely to remain dominant. In the short term, the price appears to be heading toward the $1,984 support, and if it breaks, the next stop could be the $1,937 support.

As of this writing, the Ethereum price stands at $2,114, up by more than 2% over the past day.
