Analyst: Trump's Economic Isolation Plan May Prompt Iran to Launch Strikes Across the Persian Gulf

08/22 22:05

Analysts indicate that U.S. President Trump is attempting to achieve the goals that tens of thousands of bombs and missiles have failed to accomplish—forcing Iran to end the war on U.S. terms—through a new round of sanctions, maritime blockades, and increased economic pressure on Iran's trade partners. However, this 'forcing Iran to comply' approach has a critical flaw: the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has effectively controlled the Strait of Hormuz and has repeatedly launched large numbers of attack drones towards the Persian Gulf. The Revolutionary Guard is largely immune to economic pressure and possesses numerous means of retaliation. A key moment in this U.S. initiative will be on Monday, when Treasury Secretary Mnuchin will unveil details of a new plan aimed at shifting the conflict from mutual airstrikes in the Middle East to comprehensive economic isolation. However, if the new economic pressures prove effective, Iran is likely to respond with military strikes targeting energy facilities along the Persian Gulf coast, attempting to drive up oil prices and increase the costs of U.S. actions, thereby forcing Trump to change course once again.
