OpenAI Acquires Ona to Enhance Codex's Secure Cloud Execution and Long-Term Agent Capabilities

On June 11, OpenAI announced its acquisition of Ona, integrating its secure cloud execution and orchestration technology into the Codex ecosystem. OpenAI stated that this acquisition will expand Codex, enabling it to provide a secure, customer-controlled cloud infrastructure for long-running agents in software and knowledge work. Currently, over 5 million people use Codex weekly for research, analysis, building, and automation tasks, marking a 400% increase since earlier this year. As Codex's capabilities grow, its most valuable tasks are extending from minutes to hours or even days. OpenAI noted that Ona's technology can offer a secure, persistent environment that allows agents to access necessary tools, systems, and context while progressing tasks over time. By introducing Ona, OpenAI aims to transition Codex from a reliance on single devices or active sessions to a model that can operate continuously within customer cloud environments. Ona has previously assisted 2 million developers in working within secure, reproducible cloud environments. OpenAI claims that this experience will support the next phase of Codex's development, allowing agents to continue functioning in customer cloud environments even after laptops are shut down. The acquisition is still subject to customary closing conditions, including obtaining necessary regulatory approvals. Until the transaction is completed, OpenAI and Ona will continue to operate as independent companies. After the deal is finalized, the Ona team will join OpenAI and work alongside the Codex team to advance secure, persistent enterprise-level execution capabilities.
