Crypto Subreddits Go Private for 48 Hours to Protest Against Reddit's New Policies

Several subreddits, including popular crypto communities, have gone private for 48 hours in protest of Reddit's new policies that restrict the use of third-party applications. The changes to the Reddit Data API have been met with backlash from subreddits, who argue that the move will limit their ability to create and use third-party tools for moderation. Some of the major crypto subreddits participating in the blackout include r/Bitcoin, r/CryptoCurrency, and r/cardano. While Reddit CEO Steve Huffman defended the decision, the number of inaccessible subreddits may increase if more communities join the protest. Additionally, Reddit plans to launch mobile moderator tools in the coming months to replace third-party tools. On a separate note, Reddit has achieved a new milestone with 10 million holders of its collectible avatars, which were launched on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon in July 2021.
