DOJ Sues Crypto Mixer Helix Founder to Recover $60 Million in Civil Penalties

10/21 10:36

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has formally sued the founder of the Helix cryptocurrency mixer to recover $60 million in civil penalties. In the lawsuit, the DOJ says Larry Harmon, who ran the blender, failed to pay a civil penalty imposed on him for allegedly laxly implementing measures to curb money laundering through the platform. According to the lawsuit, Harmon helped criminals use cryptocurrencies to launder money through his services while concealing their activities. In 2020, the U.S. Treasury Department, through the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), fined Harmon for allegedly violating the federal Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). According to the department, the defendant operated an unlicensed money transfer business. In 2021, Harmon pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy charges, but has not yet been sentenced.
