Microsoft and Amazon Cloud Services Reportedly Face Strict EU Antitrust Scrutiny

06/18 21:15

On June 19, following a preliminary investigation into monopolistic powers in the cloud computing market, Microsoft's Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will face stringent antitrust regulations from the European Union. Reports indicate that the European Commission is expected to announce preliminary findings as early as next week, likely indicating that AWS and Azure may meet the regulatory conditions of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Sources suggest that the EU is expected to make a final decision by the end of this year, although the timeline may change. If these tech giants' services are ultimately subject to comprehensive regulation under the DMA, they will face a range of obligations, including interoperability requirements, as well as restrictions on customer lock-in and self-preferencing practices.
