What Is Anichess

While Chess has remained an enduring game with over 7 million players, it often faces challenges in modern gaming environments—particularly in freshness, accessibility, and dynamic engagement. Traditional chess can be intimidating for newcomers while experienced players often seek deeper strategic variety and unpredictability. For instance, fixed rules and static mechanics, the cornerstone of Chess, can widen the skill gap and result in frustration for less skilled players.

Anichess modernizes traditional chess by infusing it with a unique spell layer that adds strategic depth and unpredictability, making the game accessible and engaging for everyone from beginners to grandmasters. It preserves core fundamentals of Chess such as castling, en passant, and pawn promotion, but removes check and checkmate, replacing them with direct king capture as the victory, known as Kingslay. Spells add a second layer of strategy. They cost mana and replace the normal move for a turn, significantly enhancing gameplay dynamics.

Lore

The narrative of Anichess is set in the world of Mystra—a peaceful realm governed by six Divinities: Tyde (Water), Ignis (Fire), Acre (Earth), Tempest (Storm), Sentinel (Aether), and Epoch (Time). These Divinities introduced Chess to Mystra by imbuing magical Orbs into the pieces, replacing war and violence with a system of governance based on intellect and strategic mastery. Against this backdrop, Anichess blends deep strategy with Aether-infused spell mechanics, combining spell selection, mana management, game modes, and progression-based unlocks into its core systems.

Spells & Mana System

Spells are the defining feature of Anichess—each with specific effects, mana costs, and per-match usage limits. Some spells reposition pieces, breaking traditional constraints; others directly disrupt the opponent or siphon mana. Before each match, players choose spells: Lite Mode allows 1 spell, while Classic Mode allows 3. Mana regenerates by +1 per turn if no spell is cast, up to 8 mana. If a spell captures a piece, it's treated like a normal capture.

In Anichess, the following 13 spells are available:

●Parkour Mech: Permanently transform a piece (except king and queen) into a knight. Cost: 3 mana | Limit: 2 casts.

●Imposter: Swap a piece with the opponent’s same-type piece (excluding pawn and king). Cost: 4 mana | Limit: 3 casts.

●Shot in the Dark makes a piece (except queen) invisible for 1 turn; it may move or stay; if the opponent’s piece lands on that exact square, the invisible piece is captured. Cost: 3 mana | Limit: 3 casts.

●House Recruit: Create a pawn on an empty square between the 3rd and 6th ranks. Cost: 5 mana | Limit: 3 casts.

●Bis-Hop 2.0: Leap your Bishop over one piece in its path. Can capture. Cost: 4 mana | Limit: 3 casts.

●Queen Time: Allow a knight, bishop, or rook to move once like a queen and capture other pieces (except king). Cost: 7 mana | Limit: 1 cast.

●Slip: Move a pawn, knight, or rook diagonally by 1 square, and steal 1 mana from the opponent (no capture). Cost: 1 mana | Limit: 5 casts.

●Juke: Move a pawn, knight, or bishop vertically by 1 square (no capture) and steal 1 mana. Cost: 1 mana | Limit: 6 casts.

●Shift: Move a pawn, knight, or bishop horizontally by 1 square (no capture) and steal 1 mana. Cost: 1 mana | Limit: 6 casts.

●Pengu Dive: Teleport a non-pawn piece to an empty square within a 5x5 area around it. Cost: 3 mana | Limit: 4 casts.

●Tactical Necessity: Sacrifice a piece to destroy an opponent’s lower-rank piece (except king). Cost: 1 mana | Limit: 5 casts.

●Pounce And Purr: Leap a piece to an adjacent empty square. Then, stun one opponent piece within one square of the landing spot (except king) for 1 turn. Cost: 4 mana | Limit: 2 casts.

●Transcendence: Allow a piece to traverse the board's left and right edges once. Can capture (except king). Cost: 6 mana | Limit: 2 casts.

Players unlock five core spells (Slip, Parkour Mech, House Recruit, Bis-Hop, and Imposter) after completing Scherif's introduction. Other spells could be unlocked via game tasks (e.g., completing three friend matches unlocks Shift).

Anichess's Ecosystem Advantages

Anichess is incubated by Animoca Brands and developed in partnership with Chess.com, the world’s leading online chess platform with over 200 million users. Anichess also collaborates with top chess professionals like Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Sopiko Giri, David Howell, Dina Belenkaya, and Sam Sevian. By adding spell mechanics, Anichess introduces fresh and engaging experience while blockchain ensures transparent and secured competition.

Anichess Mini Game was launched in January 2024, offering solo puzzle challenges that blend traditional moves with spells. The core PvP game with multiple modes was slated for rollout by Q3 2024. As the initial launch partner of the Checkmate Foundation ecosystem, Anichess will be the first to integrate $CHECK as its foundational strategy token.

Anichess reshapes the Chess experience by combining innovative spell mechanics with blockchain integration, addressing the key pain points of traditional chess for modern players such as a lack of freshness, excessive skill-gap barriers, opaque competition, and low community engagement. Anichess extends beyond a game to a public-good ecosystem: Through decentralized player contributions, the evolution of Chess is sustained across generations, realizing the vision that “everyone can participate, and strategy itself becomes value”.

Anichess Tokenomics

$CHECK is the strategy token of the Checkmate ecosystem, with a total fixed supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens, among which over 59% are allocated toward community and ecosystem growth. Allocation breakdown includes: Player rewards: 39.38%; Ecosystem & Treasury: 20.0%; Investors: 13.62%; Team: 10.0%; Liquidity: 7.0%; Operational expenses: 4.0%; Advisors: 4.0%; Kaito Launchpad: 2.0%.

$CHECK plays a vital role in the ecosystem, specifically:

●Competition & Earn: It is used to participate in tournaments, ranked matches, and skill events with performance-based rewards.

●Stake for Progression: Stake tokens to earn M8 Points and unlock progression perks in Anichess.

●Create & Curate: Publish Generated AI content, products, and educational initiatives; top contributions earn $CHECK.

●Collect & Access: Acquire digital collectibles, cosmetics as well as assets and access token-gated events.

●Sponsor & Govern: Support community missions, co-sponsor activities, and vote on Checkmate Improvement Proposals (CIPs) to shape the ecosystem.

Anichess plans phased $CHECK integration from high-risk Gambit Mode to ranked seasons, enabling buy-ins, competition, earnings, and future NFT crafting through cosmetics and fragments.
