Tokenization benefits ‘light at first,’ but will expand if democratized: NYDIG

NYDIG's Global Head Greg Cipolaro states that while tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) like stocks offers limited initial benefits to crypto networks, its advantages could grow significantly with greater democratization and integration. Initially, blockchains like Ethereum would gain from transaction fees and network effects. However, broader benefits—such as composability in DeFi for lending, borrowing, or trading—depend on improved technology, infrastructure, and favorable regulations. Tokenized assets vary widely in design and are hosted on both public and private networks, with significant value already on platforms like the Canton Network and Ethereum. Despite relying on traditional financial structures, blockchain offers near-instant settlement and operational efficiency. Cipolaro advises investors to monitor the space, as regulatory progress could expand the reach and utility of tokenized RWAs.

The tokenization of stocks won’t immediately be of immense benefit to the crypto market, but the benefits could increase if such assets are allowed to better integrate on blockchains, says NYDIG.

“The benefits to networks these assets reside on, such as Ethereum, are light at first, but increase as their access and interoperability and composability increase,” NYDIG global head of research Greg Cipolaro said in a note on Friday.

The initial benefits will be the transaction fees charged for using tokenized assets, and the blockchain hosting them will “enjoy increasing network effects” for storing them, Cipolaro added.

Tokenizing real-world assets, or RWAs, such as US stocks, has become a hot topic in the crypto industry, with major exchanges, including Coinbase and Kraken, wanting to launch tokenized stock platforms in the US after their success overseas.

Securities and Exchange Commission chair Paul Atkins said earlier this month that the US financial system could embrace tokenization in a “couple of years,” which Cipolaro said shows that “tokenization is likely going to be a big trend.”

“In the future, one could see these RWAs being part of DeFi (composability), either as collateral for borrowing, an asset to be lent out, or for trading,” he added. “This will take time as technology develops, infrastructure is built out, and rules and regulations evolve.”

Tokenized assets can “differ greatly”

Cipolaro noted that making composable and interoperable tokenized assets isn’t straightforward, as “their form and function differ greatly” and are hosted on public and non-public networks.

The Canton Network, a non-public blockchain created by the company Digital Asset Holdings, is currently the largest blockchain for tokenized assets with $380 billion, or “91% of the total ‘represented value’ of all RWAs,” Cipolaro explained.

Ethereum, meanwhile, is “by far and away” the most popular public blockchain for tokenized assets, with $12.1 billion of RWAs deployed on it, he added.

“But even on an open, permissionless network such as Ethereum, the design of the specific tokenized asset can vary greatly,” Cipolaro said. “These RWAs are often securities, broker-dealers, KYC/investor accreditation, whitelisted wallets, transfer agents, and other structures from traditional finance are required.”

He added that even though tokenized assets still need traditional financial structures, companies are using blockchain technology for the benefit of “near instant settlement, 24/7 operations, programmatic ownership, transparency, auditability, and collateral efficiency.”

“In the future, if things become more open and regulations become more favorable, as Chairman Atkins suggests, access to these assets should become more democratized, and thus these RWAs would enjoy expanded reach,” Cipolaro said.

“Investors should pay attention,” he added, “even if the economic impacts to traditional cryptocurrencies are minimal today.”

Polymarket's "2028 Presidential Election" Volume King Is... LeBron James???

An article from Odaily Planet Daily, authored by Azuma, discusses a peculiar phenomenon observed on the prediction market platform Polymarket regarding the "2028 US Presidential Election" event. Despite having a real-time probability of less than 1%, unlikely candidates such as NBA star LeBron James (with $48.41 million in trading volume), celebrity Kim Kardashian ($33.84 million), and even ineligible figures like Elon Musk ($23.14 million) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ($18.39 million) account for approximately 70% of the total trading volume. In contrast, high-probability candidates like Vice President JD Vance ($10.58 million), California Governor Gavin Newsom ($15.71 million), and Secretary of State Marco Rubio ($9.32 million) have significantly lower trading activity. The article explains that this counterintuitive trend is not driven by irrational speculation but by rational strategies. Polymarket offers a 4% annualized holding reward for certain markets, including the 2028 election, to maintain long-term pricing accuracy. This yield exceeds the current 5-year US Treasury rate (3.98%), attracting large investors ("whales") to hold "NO" shares on low-probability candidates for risk-free returns. Additionally, some users utilize a platform feature that allows converting a set of "NO" shares into corresponding "YES" shares for better liquidity or pricing efficiency, rather than directly buying "YES" shares for their preferred candidates. Thus, the seemingly absurd trading activity is strategically motivated.

Dialogue with ViaBTC CEO Yang Haipo: Is the Essence of Blockchain a Libertarian Experiment?

"ViaBTC CEO Yang Haipo: Blockchain as a Hardcore Libertarian Experiment" In a deep-dive interview, ViaBTC CEO Yang Haipo reframes the essence of blockchain, arguing it is not merely a new technology or infrastructure but a hardcore libertarian experiment. This experiment, born from the 2008 financial crisis and decades of cypherpunk ideology, tests a fundamental question: to what extent can freedom and self-organization exist without centralized trust? The discussion highlights the experiment's verified outcomes. On one hand, it has proven its core value of censorship resistance, providing critical financial lifelines for entities like WikiLeaks and individuals in hyperinflationary or sanctioned countries via tools like stablecoins. However, Yang points out a key paradox: the most successful product, USDT, is itself a centralized compromise, showing users prioritize a less-controlled pipeline over pure decentralization. On the other hand, the experiment has exposed the severe costs of this freedom—a "dark forest" without safeguards. Events like the collapses of LUNA, Celsius, and FTX, resulting in massive wealth destruction and prison sentences for founders, underscore the system's fragility and the inherent risks of an unregulated environment. Yang observes that despite decentralized protocols, human nature inevitably recreates centralized power structures, speculative frenzies, and narrative-driven cycles (from ICOs to Meme coins), where emotion and belonging often trump technological substance. Looking forward, he believes blockchain's future is significant but niche. Its real value lies in serving specific, real-world needs for financial sovereignty and bypassing traditional controls, not as a universal infrastructure replacing all centralized systems. For the average participant, Yang's crucial advice is to cultivate independent judgment. True freedom is not holding a crypto wallet, but possessing a mind resilient to groupthink and narrative hype in a high-risk, often irrational market.
