Brazil's Federal Police conducted "Operation Commodity," dismantling a major drug trafficking organization that used cryptocurrency to launder money from cocaine exports to Europe. The group smuggled over 6.5 tons of cocaine concealed in shipments of coffee, cement, and mortar through the port of Rio de Janeiro. Linked to Brazil's PCC and CV factions, the network had operations spanning South America, Europe, and Asia. Authorities executed 13 arrests, 44 search warrants, and seized assets valued at nearly $196 million. An elite car dealership in São Paulo was identified as a front used to funnel drug proceeds into Brazil's financial system via fraudulent invoices and cryptocurrency.

Brazil's Federal Police carried out an operation against a major drug trafficking gang that used cryptocurrency to launder money obtained from exporting drugs to Europe.

On Thursday, Brazil's Federal Police announced the results of Operation "Commodity," which dismantled a gang that used the port of Rio de Janeiro to smuggle cocaine hidden in shipments of coffee, cement, and mortar, primarily sent to Europe using a logistics network spanning South America, Europe, and Asia.

The investigation indicates that since 2021, the gang has smuggled more than 6.5 tons of cocaine to various European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain.

During the operation, which involved actions in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo, 13 preventive arrests were made and 44 searches were conducted with property seizures; courts issued orders for asset seizures and property freezes totaling up to 1 billion reals (nearly 196 million dollars). In one of these locations, a shootout erupted, during which a suspect died from gunshot wounds while resisting.

This gang had connections with "Primeiro Comando da Capital" (PCC) and "Comando Vermelho" (CV) — two criminal organizations that the Trump administration designated as "Specially Designated Global Terrorists" (SDGT) and which were previously the target of Operation "Exchange," which dismantled a $2 billion cryptocurrency money laundering network earlier this month.

Police reported that a luxury car dealership located in the São Paulo metropolitan area, offering brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, and Land Rover, was part of the operation, where drug trafficking proceeds were laundered using cryptocurrency through shell companies.

Using these shell companies, the organizers issued invoices without supporting documents, injecting these funds into the Brazilian financial system and using cryptocurrency to conceal and obfuscate their transactions.

"The suspects will be held accountable for their role in crimes related to the operation of a transnational criminal organization, international drug trafficking, and money laundering, without prejudice to any other offenses that may be identified during the investigations," concluded the Federal Police.

Thanks to Dice Rolls, Bitcoin Keys Are Stored Offline, But Not Everyone Will Do It

The article discusses using dice rolls to generate secure Bitcoin wallet seeds, providing entropy independent of potentially flawed hardware random number generators. It explains that each fair dice roll offers about 2.585 bits of entropy, with around 50 rolls needed for a standard 12-word seed phrase and 99+ recommended for higher security. This method gained attention after a vulnerability was revealed in some Coldcard hardware wallets, where a faulty firmware RNG (dating back to 2021) compromised generated keys. The analysis notes that while a dice-generated main seed was safe from this specific flaw, other Coldcard functions (like creating paper wallets, backup keys, or passwords) could still be vulnerable if they used the defective RNG. The piece argues that while dice-based entropy is technically robust, the manual process is error-prone, tedious, and unrealistic for most new users, who might make mistakes in recording or inputting rolls. It concludes that while manual entropy generation should remain an option for advanced users, the long-term goal is to develop reliable, user-friendly hardware and software that securely generates randomness without requiring specialized knowledge. Coldcard users are advised to check their firmware version and replace any secondary secrets (like paper wallet keys) created with vulnerable devices, while also considering multi-signature setups with devices from different manufacturers for added security.
