Illegal mining in regions where cryptocurrency mining is prohibited is becoming increasingly risky. Energy supply companies notice atypical growth in electricity consumption in residential buildings and initiate a clear chain of inspections:

  • they send information to the prosecutor's office.

This was warned by investment advisor Rufat Abyasov from the Bank of Russia register. According to him, home mining farms give themselves away with a characteristic load: an apartment consumes electricity steadily and practically around the clock, so such deviations are clearly noticeable in the statistics.

Energy supply companies have long been tracking abnormal consumption in the residential sector and sending data to tax authorities and the prosecutor's office. A steady load in an apartment around the clock is so recognizable that there is usually no need to specifically search for it.

When Mining Remains Legal

It is legal to engage in mining where there is no ban on cryptocurrency mining and where electricity is consumed under a contract, with proper metering and payment. Income from mining must be accounted for taxes: the very fact of mining does not exempt from the obligation to pay tax.

For legalizing activities, proper registration and interaction with government agencies are important: registration or notification is needed in cases required by current regulations.

What Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining Threatens

Furthermore, income from cryptocurrency mining is subject to tax regardless of whether the activity itself was legal. This also applies to cases where miners mine Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency in circumvention of established restrictions.

Since August 15, a ban on cryptocurrency mining began to operate in Moscow, the Moscow region, as well as in a number of municipal districts of the Kursk region. The restrictions are introduced to reduce the risk of electricity shortages.

Year-round bans until March 15, 2031, are in effect in the following zones:

  • Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia — a full ban until March 15, 2031.
  • LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions — a full ban until March 15, 2031.
  • Southern Irkutsk region, most districts of Transbaikal and Buryatia — a year-round ban until March 15, 2031.
