An Ethereum whale has opened a massive $100 million short position while market sentiment around ETH remains uncertain. The move gained attention shortly after Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that he plans to reduce the amount of ETH he sells in the future, a comment many investors interpreted as a signal of stronger long-term confidence in Ethereum.

According to blockchain tracking data, the whale entered the leveraged short position near a major resistance zone, suggesting expectations of short-term downside volatility. Large short positions from institutional traders or whales often increase market tension because they can trigger aggressive liquidations if the market suddenly moves against them. Traders are now closely watching whether Ethereum can hold key support levels or force a short squeeze against bearish positions.

At the same time, Vitalik Buterin’s comments regarding ETH sales have sparked renewed discussions inside the crypto community. Over the years, some investors criticized periodic ETH sales from Ethereum Foundation-linked wallets, arguing that they created additional market pressure. According to a Bloomberg report published Friday, SEC staff had already reviewed a draft framework tied to the agency's proposed "innovation exemption," which was expected to be released earlier this week before discussions slowed.
People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that feedback from stock exchange officials and other market participants centered on whether tokenized equities could preserve the same legal and economic rights attached to traditional shares.
Questions were also raised over how ownership records would be verified on semi-pseudonymous blockchains and whether unauthorized firms could issue stock-linked tokens without approval from the underlying public companies.
Under the proposal reviewed by the SEC, platforms offering tokenized equities would need to ensure investors retain rights typically associated with common stock, including dividend access and shareholder voting privileges.
Earlier in the week, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce had already signaled that any exemption under consideration would likely remain narrow in scope.
