Why Hashdex’s new crypto ETF keeps 100% of your initial staking yields and 40% of everything else
Hashdex plans to put some of the crypto held by its Nasdaq CME Crypto Index ETF (NCIQ) to work through staking. The sponsor takes the first slice of net income, while common shareholders begin sharing in the rewards after an annual threshold is cleared.

The framework is prospective. A July 23 Form 8-K named Coinbase Cloud as the initial provider and said staking was expected to begin promptly, subject to operational readiness.

Under the July 23 prospectus supplement, a staking provider first retains its portion of gross rewards. Hashdex then receives all remaining net staking income up to a dollar threshold equal to 0.25% of common-share net asset value through one Sponsor Share, a separate unlisted class held exclusively by Hashdex. Income above that threshold is split 40% to Hashdex and 60% to the trust for holders of publicly traded NCIQ common shares.

The threshold is measured over each fiscal year and prorated for a partial year. If net staking income stays at or below it, none is allocated to the trust for common shareholders’ benefit.

For illustration, if net staking income reached 1% of common-share NAV after provider fees over a full year, the trust would receive 0.45% for common shareholders. Hashdex would collect the remaining 0.55%, comprising the first 0.25% and 40% of the next 0.75 percentage point. The figures are illustrative rather than a forecast or realized return.

The Sponsor Share return is separate from NCIQ’s 0.25% annual management fee and is not netted against it.

Provider deductions vary by asset. Hashdex’s NCIQ product page lists an 8% fee on gross ether staking rewards, an 8% validator commission for Solana, and a 5% validator commission for Cardano.

Empery Digital said it invested $20 million in Cardinal Data Power, acquiring an approximately 8% stake in the private developer of powered data center campuses.

The investment was part of Cardinal Data Power’s approximately $70 million Series A financing and will support development of a 750-megawatt data center campus in West Texas. The project is expected to deliver its first power in 2027, expand to about 1 gigawatt by 2029 and eventually exceed 5 gigawatts.

Cardinal develops powered data center campuses for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads. The company said it combines power generation, natural gas supply and electrical infrastructure to accelerate development of large-scale computing sites.

Empery has been moving away from its Bitcoin (BTC) treasury strategy, which it adopted in mid-2025 after pivoting from its former electric powersports business. Earlier this month, the company disclosed it had sold about 1,400 Bitcoin over a two-month period for roughly $87.1 million, using the proceeds to fund AI infrastructure investments and repay debt.

The sale came as Empery faced mounting pressure from shareholder Tice P. Brown, who called on the company to abandon its treasury strategy and sought the resignation of its chief executive officer and board.

Currency markets also showed risk-on trends, with the Aussie dollar and euro gaining against the U.S. dollar.The United States and Iran paused military strikes against each other for a second consecutive day, creating room for a diplomatic breakthrough. The war, which began in late February, entered a fragile ceasefire in the second quarter, but it quickly unraveled.

Iran reportedly said that it would continue to halt airstrikes as long as the U.S. did the same, marking a tenous start of what appears to be yet another peace process.

Bitcoin began as peer-to-peer electronic cash, but the market gave it a different job. Over the past decade, Bitcoin has become crypto’s benchmark investment asset: something to accumulate, custody, borrow against, and measure against. Stablecoins, meanwhile, became the industry’s practical payment rail.

That split made sense. Bitcoin’s volatility, confirmation times, and tax complexity made it awkward for everyday spending, while stablecoins offered the thing merchants and users actually needed: a familiar unit of account that could move quickly across digital rails. Bitcoin became the asset people did not want to spend. Stablecoins became the money they could.

The gap is becoming more visible as stablecoins move deeper into mainstream payment infrastructure. Visa said its stablecoin settlement pilot now supports nine blockchains and had reached a $7 billion annualized settlement run rate as of March 2026. That does not mean stablecoins have solved every payments problem, but it does show which part of crypto is being absorbed most quickly into commercial finance.

Bitcoin is now facing the opposite question. It does not need to prove that it can be held. It needs to prove that it can move in ways that create useful economic activity. More specifically, it raises a question for the companies that secure the network: can miners evolve from passive validators into active participants in Bitcoin’s payment economy?

For most of Bitcoin’s history, miners have had a narrow but essential role: secure the network, validate transactions, and earn block rewards plus transaction fees. Yet block rewards decline with each halving, which means Bitcoin’s long-term economics increasingly depend on whether transaction activity can become a more meaningful source of revenue. That transition is still far from complete.
