Coinbase Warns Crypto’s Protection Could Eventually Break

Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) has started preparing its custody systems and infrastructure for a future in which powerful quantum computers could defeat the cryptography protecting Bitcoin, Ethereum and other blockchain networks.

Coinbase Chief Information Security Officer Jeff Lunglhofer outlined the company’s position in a July 23 company blog post:

“A large-scale quantum computer capable of breaking current cryptography will eventually be built. No one knows exactly when. But the work to prepare needs to start now, not when it’s urgent.”

The company said its Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain has high confidence that a fault-tolerant quantum computer will eventually be developed. Coinbase formed the board to assess long-term quantum risks facing digital assets, according to Coinbase’s quantum advisory board announcement.

“The cryptography that secures virtually every major blockchain is vulnerable when it arrives. The threat is not imminent, but the timeline is genuinely uncertain,” Lunglhofer added.

The warning does not suggest that quantum computers can currently defeat the cryptography securing major blockchains. Instead, Coinbase argues that upgrading global blockchain systems, moving millions of users and replacing vulnerable cryptographic methods could take years, making early preparation essential.

Coinbase’s preparations align with broader cybersecurity efforts. The new rules have sparked a debate about whether or not they will solve the company’s capital-structure problems or simply delay them.

How does Strategy’s new capital framework operate?
Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR) recently disclosed a new “Digital Credit Capital Framework” in a 8-K regulatory filing.

Cryptopolitan reported that the framework grants the company formal permission to sell up to $1.25 billion worth of Bitcoin. Notably, the firm is facing a massive unrealized loss of roughly $14 billion on its holdings of 847,363 $BTC.

The framework creates a formal USD reserve policy that introduces revised dividend terms for its STRC preferred shares, and authorizes separate repurchase programs for both preferred stock and MSTR common shares at $1 billion each.

The board has kept aside the company’s $2.55 billion cash reserve, restricting its use to preferred dividends and debt interest.

If the current spending rates of roughly $1.76 billion annually are retained, this reserve is expected to last for about 17 months. If the full authorized sale of Bitcoin were to be executed, total liquidity would stretch to approximately $3.8 billion, an amount that would cover about 26 months of obligations.

Alex Thorn of Galaxy Research pointed out that the core of the debate is whether these new rules actually solve Strategy’s capital-structure issues or simply delay them.

It is a good story. It is also a comparison that falls apart the moment you check the numbers, the legislation, and the vote count. Here is the honest version.

What Actually Happened To AI Stocks After 2021?
The Magnificent Seven — Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Tesla — carried a combined market capitalisation of roughly $22.6 trillion as of 22 July 2026, around a third of the entire S&P 500. Nvidia alone sits above $5 trillion. The direction of travel in the viral post is correct: an enormous amount of value has been created since 2021.

The causation is not. The National AI Initiative Act created a coordination office and a federal R&D framework. It did not deregulate a market, unlock institutional capital, or remove a legal overhang. What actually re-rated those stocks was ChatGPT, a capex supercycle, and earnings. The Magnificent Seven are projected to spend around $680 billion on AI-related capital expenditure in 2026 alone. That is the engine — not a 2021 authorisation bill.

There is also a warning inside the comparison that the bullish framing skips. That trade is currently cracking. The Mag 7 ETF is up only marginally in 2026, the group is down roughly 11% from its May record, and JPMorgan strategists have publicly compared the internal split between chipmakers and hyperscalers to the late stages of the dot-com bubble. If crypto gets an "AI-style re-rating," that is what it looks like at the end.
