Bitcoin could see further downside risks as Iran attacks U.S. bases across Middle East

What started as an Israeli strike on Iran hours earlier has escalated into the broadest Middle Eastern military conflict in decades, posing a risk to financial markets, including cryptocurrencies.

Per reports on Bloomberg, CNN and Reuters, Iran launched waves of missiles and drones targeting not just Israel but U.S. bases and interests across the Gulf. Bahrain confirmed an American military base had been attacked. Qatar and the UAE said they intercepted missiles over their territory. Explosions were heard in Dubai. Bahrain closed its airspace entirely.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency said all U.S. bases and interests in the region would be targeted.

President Trump said the U.S. had begun "major combat operations in Iran" aimed at eliminating the country's missile inventory, navy, and nuclear infrastructure. "The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties," he said. "That often happens in war."

Bitcoin, which had already fallen below $64,000 on the initial Israeli strikes, held above $63,000 as the retaliatory wave hit. The relative stability is partly mechanical.

Weekend liquidity is thin, and many leveraged positions that would amplify a sell-off were already flushed during the week's slide from $70,000.

But the real test comes when traditional markets reopen

Solana More Decentralized than Ethereum, Maybe Even Bitcoin: SOL Co-founder

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has stated that his cryptocurrency network is more decentralized than Ethereum and perhaps even Bitcoin itself. Yakovenko made these comments in a recent tweet, which stirred a lot of online debate about the controversial take. Solana is currently trading below $80 after losing around 5% of its value over the last 24 hours, following the start of major hostilities in the Middle East.
The debate over the level of decentralization in individual crypto networks is not new. According to Solana proponents, the network exceeds Ethereum in decentralization due to its thousands of independent validators and Proof of History cryptographic clock. They claim that Solana’s overall operation is closer to Bitcoin’s and clearly ahead of Ethereum’s centralized alternative.

However, Ethereum proponents argue that Solana has only 800-1,500 active validators, compared with Ethereum’s over 1 million. One user responded to Yakovenko’s post:

Solana has long tried to position itself as Ethereum 2.0, as the older network has continued to struggle with scaling issues. Solana’s on-chain activity has dwarfed Ethereum’s in recent memory, even as the market reels from a major price squeeze that has forced many smaller crypto networks into oblivion.

Solana also commands a higher Nakamoto Coefficient (ranging roughly between 19–34) compared to Ethereum’s (often estimated around 2–25), suggesting that, despite fewer total nodes, Solana’s stake is sometimes more distributed among validators, while Ethereum’s staking is concentrated in bigger entities like Lido or major crypto exchange platforms.

Today, the currency has solidified its place among the largest financial assets in the world with investors, companies and governments rushing to get a piece as the original cryptocurrency breaks $100,000. 

Bitcoin’s yearlong rally has led it to climb up the list of the world’s most valuable financial assets—it is currently No. 7 on the list.  With a market cap just shy of $2 trillion, the currency is now worth more than silver and the Saudi Arabian oil company Aramco. 

Currently, the only assets that have a market cap greater than Bitcoin are gold, Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google’s parent company Alphabet. Bitcoin’s market cap was sitting around $1.96 trillion on Friday morning, just $165 billion away from Google’s.
