Executives at federally regulated banks told a Consensus Miami 2026 panel that crypto companies are increasingly seeking bank licenses as the industry moves toward regulated financial infrastructure.

Executives at federally regulated banks told the Consensus Miami 2026 Policy Summit on Thursday that the number of crypto companies seeking bank charters is rising sharply, as the industry pursues regulated status to gain credibility and reduce costs.

The session formed part of the Day 3 policy agenda, which also featured discussions on PAC spending, midterm strategy, and crypto legislation.

A bank charter gives a company direct access to customer deposits, federal oversight, and the legal authority to offer banking services.

For crypto firms, the appeal is structural: chartered status reduces borrowing costs, moves operations out of regulatory grey areas, and signals legitimacy to institutional clients who remain cautious about unregulated counterparties.

As crypto.news reported, at least half a dozen crypto industry executives confirmed in early 2025 that their firms saw an opportunity under the Trump administration to apply for banking licenses.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency reversed its anti-crypto stance and permitted banks to engage in cryptocurrency-related activity including stablecoins operations and custody. Law firm Troutman Pepper Locke said it was “working on several applications now,” according to filings.

World Liberty Financial applied for a national trust bank charter through its WLTC Holdings entity in January, making it one of the most high-profile applications to date, even as Senator Elizabeth Warren called for the OCC to pause the review.

Coinbax wins $20,000 PitchFest prize at Consensus Miami for stablecoin compliance

MIAMI – Coinbax won the $20,000 grand prize at Consensus Miami’s PitchFest after pitching a system designed to help banks and financial firms manage compliance for stablecoin payments.

The company, founded by former Jack Henry executive Peter Glyman, builds programmable escrow infrastructure that adds controls to wallet-to-wallet crypto transactions. The software is meant to reduce the risks financial institutions face when moving funds onchain.

“Banks want to use stablecoins for payments, but they need to get their compliance people comfortable with the idea of moving money onchain,” Glyman said during his presentation.

He described a future where “wallet addresses [are] associated with every bank account,” with transactions moving between banks, fintech firms and self-custody wallets. In that environment, he argued, compliance checks need to happen directly onchain rather than only through traditional banking intermediaries.

Coinbax uses smart contracts to hold funds in escrow while third-party services verify identity, sanctions screening and transaction risk. Funds settle only after conditions are met.

“We provide a trust layer,” Glyman said. “We provide programmable escrow that adds the control layer to these payments.”

The startup launched in October, closed a seed round in December and is already live on Base mainnet, according to Glyman. He said the company is working with banks, custody firms and wallet providers on pilot programs.

Second place went to Tashi, a decentralized infrastructure project focused on coordinating and managing AI systems across distributed networks.

Sabadell Joins European Banking Consortium
On Tuesday, Spain’s fourth-largest banking group by assets, Sabadell, announced it will join the Qivalis consortium as traditional financial institutions wrestle with the fast-growing stablecoin industry and broader crypto market adoption, Reuters reported.

The Qivalis consortium was set up in Amsterdam in 2025 by several major European banks to develop and issue a Markets in Crypto Asset Regulation (MiCA) compliant, euro‐pegged stablecoin in the second half of 2026 to help counter the US dollar’s dominance in digital payments.

Sabadell’s CEO, César González-Bueno, said in a press conference that the Qivalis initiative “is primarily designed ⁠to make transactions more efficient and secure,” adding, “It is a European project that we believe makes sense, and we will indeed be part of it.

Notably, the project comprises a dozen European institutions, including ING, UniCredit, KBC, Danske Bank, and BNP Paribas. Last month, Spain’s BBVA, the country’s second-largest bank and one of the largest financial institutions globally, announced it had also joined the banking consortium.

As reported by Bitcoinist, the banking giant considers that collaboration is crucial to “create common standards that support the evolution of the future banking model and deliver financial innovation to our clients in a consistent and practical way.”

Coinbase reports $394M Q1 loss as stock declines 5% after hours amid trading slowdown


Coinbase shares declined about 5% in after hours trading Thursday after the crypto exchange reported a first quarter loss and weaker revenue as trading activity slowed across the market.

The company posted $1.4 billion in total revenue, $756 million in transaction revenue, and a $394 million net loss for Q1 2026.

The results marked a sharp reversal from the same period last year, when Coinbase reported a profit of $65.6 million. Revenue fell from $2.03 billion a year earlier, while analysts had expected about $1.49 billion.

Coinbase said total crypto market volumes and spot volumes both fell more than 20% quarter over quarter, while low volatility suppressed trading activity, particularly in longer tail assets. The company said transaction revenue fell 23% quarter over quarter, outperforming broader market volume declines.

Subscription and services revenue reached $584 million, accounting for 44% of net revenue. Stablecoin revenue totaled $305 million, driven by $USDC market cap growth and record average $USDC held in Coinbase products of $19 billion.

The company also pointed to growth in newer business lines. Retail derivatives annualized revenue topped $200 million, while prediction markets reached more than $100 million in annualized revenue in March, its first two full months live.

Coinbase reported $303 million in adjusted EBITDA, marking its 13th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA. The company also ended the quarter with $10.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents and said it had $12 billion in available resources, including $1.8 billion in crypto and marketable investments.

For Q2, Coinbase said transaction revenue was about $215 million quarter to date through May 5 and guided subscription and services revenue between $565 million and
