Bitcoin has surged from around $63,000 to near $80,000 in the past week, and the on-chain analytics platform Glassnode points out that this recent rise is not simply due to low liquidity. According to Glassnode, aggressive buying in spot markets, increased trading volumes, strengthening liquidity, and institutional demand indicate that real capital inflows are behind Bitcoin’s surge.Glassnode’s assessment stated that Bitcoin had strongly broken out of its previous trading range and managed to stay near its peak levels despite brief consolidations. The increase in trading volume and market depth indicated that the rise was supported by a more meaningful capital allocation, rather than a temporary bounce stemming from weak market conditions.

Data from derivative markets also indicates that investors are shifting to a more aggressive risk stance. Glassnode reported that taker flows in perpetual futures have strongly shifted in favor of buyers, and cumulative volume indicators have risen above the upper statistical bands.
However, it was also noted that the amount of open positions in futures contracts expanded to high levels. According to the platform, this indicates a significant increase in speculative participation and leverage use in the market.A similar strengthening is seen on the institutional investor side. The fact that the trading volumes and weekly net inflows of spot Bitcoin ETFs have significantly exceeded historical thresholds indicates that institutional demand is actively participating in the recent bull run.

Bullish Analyst Tom Lee Speaks Out: “This Latest Move by the U.S. Treasury Department Is for Cryptocurrencies…”
Fundstrat co-founder and analyst Tom Lee said that expectations that the U.S. Treasury Department may deploy approximately $1 trillion to expand its long-term bond repurchase program could be positive for financial markets.

According to Lee, a large-scale buyback of long-term government bonds by the U.S. Treasury Department could put downward pressure on long-term interest rates. He noted that such a development could support the valuations of assets sensitive to long-term interest rates, such as stocks, cryptocurrencies, gold, and real estate.

The renowned strategist stated that the decline in long-term interest rates would increase the attractiveness of “long-term assets,” which are particularly sensitive to the present value of future cash flows. Lee argued that bond buybacks should therefore be considered a marginal improvement in liquidity conditions in the markets.

According to CoinGlass, the index had been negative for 97 consecutive days starting May 19, marking the longest such streak on record. The brief flip to +0.0032% on Aug. 24 was notable, though it slipped back to -0.0141% the following day, indicating that the shift may be tentative rather than a definitive trend reversal.

Context and Market Implications

The extended negative streak aligns with a period of subdued U.S. crypto trading activity, which some analysts attribute to regulatory uncertainty, seasonal liquidity patterns, and a broader risk-off sentiment among institutional investors. While the single-day positive reading is not conclusive, it adds to a growing set of on-chain and exchange flow metrics that traders watch for early signs of demand rotation.

It is important to note that the premium index is a narrow measure and can be influenced by factors such as arbitrage activity, exchange-specific liquidity, and timing of large trades.
