The crypto market flatlined on Tuesday with bitcoin remaining unchanged at $76,800 and ether ($ETH) dropping about 0.1% since midnight UTC.

The subdued price action comes after the biggest cryptocurrencies slid on Monday, with a $2 billion Strategy (MSTR) bitcoin purchase failing to inspire a recovery.

Bitcoin's price is, crucially, hovering around Bitmine (BMNR) Chairman Tom Lee's line in the sand. Lee said a bull market would be confirmed if bitcoin closes the month above $76,000.

The majority of altcoins have tracked bitcoin's lackluster performance this week, with 18 of the 20 tokens making up the CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20) posting losses. SUI and NEAR were the only two in the black after edging higher since midnight.

Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 index futures fell by 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) added 0.3%.

The CLARITY Act just cleared the Senate Banking Committee in the most significant regulatory breakthrough for crypto in US history. Bitcoin should be rallying, but instead it is down $6,000 since the vote advanced the bill to the full Senate, wiping $126 billion from its market cap. Ethereum fell more than 10%, erasing $30 billion. The total crypto market cap has dropped $190 billion in just five days.

Reason One: Sell the News
The CLARITY Act rally was priced in during the weeks of anticipation leading up to the markup vote. The moment the bill actually advanced, traders who bought in anticipation of the event sold into the confirmation. This pattern has played out across crypto at every major regulatory milestone and Thursday was no different.

The bill still needs 60 Senate votes, House reconciliation, and a presidential signature.

Reason Two: Iran Tensions Are Back

Trump’s warning to Iran that “the clock is ticking” earlier this week sent oil above $107 a barrel and triggered a broad risk-off move across global markets. Crypto sold off alongside equities as geopolitical fear returned.

Trump has since said serious negotiations with Iran are now taking place and confirmed he called off a planned military strike scheduled for tomorrow after the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE personally asked him to pause, telling him a deal is within reach. The military has been ordered to remain ready to launch a full-scale attack if an acceptable deal is not reached. The condition is clear: no nuclear weapons for Iran.

Echo Protocol is the latest decentralized finance (DeFi) platform to be hacked, suffering an exploit worth around $77 million.

The Bitcoin-focused DeFi protocol suffered an attack in which about 1,000 unauthorised eBTC ($77 million) were minted on the Monad blockchain, PeckShield posted on X on Tuesday.

The attacker used a compromised admin key to mint tokens, then borrowed wrapped bitcoin (WBTC) worth $3.45 million against funds in the money market and the reward layer at Curvance, and then laundered them through crypto mixer Tornado Cash.

Echo Protocol said it had regained control of the admin keys and burnt the remaining 955 eBTC that the attacker still held.

"We have paused cross-chain functionality for the Monad deployment and completed an upgrade of the relevant Monad contract to restrict affected operations and strengthen control over sensitive functions," Echo said on X.

Echo Protocol is a platform giving users liquidity and yield on bitcoin holdings through synthetic representations of BTC such as eBTC. Its primary home is the Aptos network, but it subsequently expanded to other chains, including Monad.

"Although the Aptos bridge has not been affected, we have fully paused Aptos bridge operations as a precautionary measure while our review continues," Echo Protocol added.

Bitcoin has pulled back sharply from $82,000 to $76,800 in a matter of days. On the surface, a 6% decline after a strong rally from $60,000 can look like a routine pullback. However, the market data underneath the price action suggests otherwise.

Three signals are pointing in the same direction, and together they paint a picture of a market that's fearing a deeper price slide.

ETF outflows accelerate
The 11 U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have shed over $1.5 billion since May 7, according to SoSoValue data. Monday's withdrawals alone hit $648 million, the highest single-day tally since January 29 and the second time in a week that daily outflows have exceeded $600 million. Last Tuesday, investors yanked $635 million from the same funds.

The pace of redemptions has more than offset the inflows seen at the start of the month, resulting in a net outflow of $396 million since May 1. Routine corrections usually don't see sustained institutional selling of this magnitude. This one has.

Aggressive selling at market orders
The second signal is Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD), which measures whether buyers or sellers are driving the price action. It does this by tracking the net volume of aggressive market orders (buy/sell) rather thanaaa passive limit orders.

When CVD turns deeply negative, it means sellers are actively hitting bids rather than waiting patiently for buyers. And it has flipped negative in both spot and futures markets.

During the sell-off, aggregate spot CVD across major exchanges has dropped from $16.9 million to minus $126.2 million, according to Glassnode, which described the move as a "pronounced shift toward aggressive selling."

Earlier this year, he declared that “the four-year cycle is dead,” arguing that Bitcoin’s price is now increasingly driven by institutional capital flows rather than retail speculation.
According to Strategy, the company has achieved a BTC Yield of 12.6% year-to-date, further reinforcing its aggressive Bitcoin treasury strategy.
Saylor has long encouraged investors to “never sell” Bitcoin, but recent comments during an earnings call caught attention when he suggested the company could eventually sell a portion of its BTC holdings to fund dividends and demonstrate financial flexibility to the market.
