The U.S. Department of Justice has expanded its case against members of the Iran-based Mabna Institute, adding charges against eight individuals and linking five of them to the 2017 hack of HBO that included a ransom demand of roughly $6 million in Bitcoin. The new indictments bring the total number of defendants in the broader cyber-espionage case to 17.According to the DOJ, Behzad Mesri was previously indicted separately for allegedly hacking HBO’s systems, stealing internal data, and demanding a Bitcoin ransom of about $6 million. The latest charges allege that five of the newly charged defendants directly participated in that operation alongside Mesri. The Mabna Institute is accused of conducting cyberattacks against U.S. and international universities, companies, and government agencies on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other entities.The Mabna Institute has been linked to a series of intrusions dating back to at least 2013, targeting over 300 universities in the U.S. and abroad. The group’s activities have been characterized by U.S. officials as systematic theft of intellectual property and sensitive data. The new charges underscore the ongoing threat posed by state-sponsored hacking groups and the increasing use of cryptocurrency in ransom demands.

Laser Digital Japan, the Japanese arm of Nomura’s digital assets subsidiary, has completed its registration with Japanese regulators as a Crypto Asset Exchange Service Provider, which allows the firm to begin building its institutional crypto business in the country, according to a Friday announcement.

Laser Digital Japan will focus on providing liquidity for domestic virtual asset service providers, with plans to eventually offer digital asset trading opportunities to institutional investors. The firm has not yet disclosed when those services will launch or exactly which products will be available.

The regulatory approval comes as Japanese institutions become increasingly receptive to crypto as an investment asset class. According to the 2026 Institutional Investor Survey by Nomura and Laser Digital, 65% of respondents consider crypto assets a diversification tool, while nearly 79% said they plan to invest in the asset class over the next three years.

Steve Ashley, co-founder and executive chairman of Laser Digital, said the approval underscores the company’s readiness to meet Japan’s regulatory standards as sophisticated investors seek greater access to digital assets and institutional-grade infrastructure.

Bitcoin’s latest rally has pushed the cryptocurrency above a key long-term technical indicator for the first time in about nine months, offering a potential signal that its broader downtrend is losing momentum.

Charting platform Barchart highlighted on Thursday that Bitcoin’s (BTC) price had crossed above its 200-day moving average for the first time since November 2025, roughly a month after BTC reached an all-time high above $126,000.

The 200-day moving average is widely used to gauge longer-term market trends, with moves above the indicator often viewed as a sign of bullish momentum. A sustained break above the level could therefore suggest that Bitcoin’s months-long downtrend is beginning to weaken.

The move came as Bitcoin climbed to nearly $73,000 on Thursday, according to TradingView data.

Bitcoin has gained more than 13% since Wednesday, when the US Treasury Department announced it would at least double the size of liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasury securities, raising the maximum from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation beginning Sept. 9.

The operation aims to improve liquidity at the long end of the Treasury market and initially pushed long-term yields lower, helping bolster risk appetite across financial markets.

Following the Treasury’s announcement, Standard Chartered’s Geoff Kendrick said the move could help fuel a broader Bitcoin rally toward $100,000 by year-end.

Ripple is backing a new institutional credit fund that will lend its $RLUSD stablecoin to fintech and payments companies on the $XRP Ledger, alongside lending platform Clearpool and credit manager Cicada Partners.

The fund will provide working-capital loans denominated in $RLUSD, per a release shared with CoinDesk, with Cicada sourcing borrowers, setting loan terms and monitoring credit risk. Clearpool is building the infrastructure used to create and manage the lending pools, while Ripple provides capital as an investor alongside other institutions.

Neither the size of the fund nor Ripple's commitment was disclosed.

None of it is live on the $XRP Ledger's main network yet, however. Clearpool is testing the integration on a development network, and the two ledger features underpinning the product, a lending protocol known as XLS-66 and single asset vaults under XLS-65, are still going through the network's amendment voting process, as CoinDesk earlier reported.

Those two do the work the fund needs. The lending protocol handles issuing and repaying loans directly on the ledger. The vault system pools money from several lenders under a manager who decides where it goes, which in this case is Cicada.

The firm says it has underwritten more than $860 million of credit and will act as both fund general partner and credit-pool manager. Clearpool says it has facilitated more than $930 million of institutional loans since 2021.
