‘Pretty Depressing’: Bitcoin Developer Laments Low Bitcoin Payment Adoption in El Salvador

The statements of a Bitcoin Core collaborator commenting on the state of bitcoin payments in El Salvador have awakened concerns about the low adoption level of bitcoin in the country, even as it has been globally promoted as the first bitcoin Country after passing the so-called bitcoin law in 2021.

Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core contributor since 2019 who has been living in El Salvador since 2022 and was temporarily arrested last year, raised concerns among bitcoin proponents on social media when he shared his experience after paying with bitcoin in El Zonte, a Salvadoran region known as an adoption hotspot.

“Lunched in El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach) today. After I paid, they told me it was the first bitcoin payment there all month, going on to describe how before, they used to see many payments in bitcoin, and that now it’s practically non existent. Pretty depressing,” Atack declared.

He added that after asking about how most customers paid, he was told that almost all customers paid by card.

“I then asked if she wanted a tip in sats, but she had forgotten how to use her bitcoin app and didn’t really want any: ‘It’s dead,'” he said.

Atack stressed that this observation was anecdotal, but highlighted that the person had worked there for three years and had seen the evolution of payments in the zone.

Atack’s remarks awakened positive and negative reactions, with some even refuting his experience. Juan Galt, a bitcoin reporter, recognized that there was “an economics problem at hand and no one seems to be taking it seriously,” assessing that an altruistic behavior was needed for bitcoin payments to push a circular economy, but that, given the expectation of bitcoin going up in price, this behavior was “counter-economic” at its core.

Memecoins are surprisingly shiny right now.

Dogecoin [$DOGE] is leading the move, while several other tokens have been posting even bigger gains. Hence, the question: Is the sector about to take off again?

At the time of writing, memecoin leader $DOGE was up by about 33% month-to-date after trading near $0.091, at the time of writing.The scale of the memecoin’s bullishness was evidenced by the strong buying pressure too, with $DOGE’s RSI above 78. The CMF was positive at 0.19 too. This indicated that even after the rally, money was continuing to flow into the asset.That’s not all though as derivatives traders might have woken up as well. $DOGE’s Open Interest (OI), for instance, went up to around $635 million, with the funding rate positive too. This implied that traders were leaning bullish and willing to pay to hold their longs.

Now, while the pace may be obvious, the memecoin’s next move may not be as straightforward as one would think.

Given that the entire memecoin sector has posted commanding weekly gains, it’s no wonder then that traders have been rotating into higher-risk tokens.

Official Trump [$TRUMP] , for instance, gained by around 79%, while Pudgy Penguins [$PENGU] rose by 61%. Pepe [$PEPE] too climbed by nearly 60% over the week.

Bonk [BONK] and SPX6900 [$SPX] also recorded gains of about 38% and 45%, respectively. Even Shiba Inu [SHIB] gained by about 22%.

These findings puts $DOGE’s 31% weekly rise into perspective. In fact, it may be wide enough to look like a category-wide risk-on trade.

However, this does not mean the altcoin market has automatically entered altseason either.

Blockchain Association asked five U.S. agencies to clarify that customer identification requirements under the $GENIUS Act apply to direct issuer relationships, not independent peer-to-peer stablecoin transactions.
The industry group filed its comments by the Aug. 21 deadline and summarized its position on Aug. 24. It supported the proposal’s main approach but requested clearer definitions, less duplicated compliance work and explicit flexibility for digital identity tools.
FinCEN, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and National Credit Union Administration jointly proposed the customer identification program in June.
Stablecoin identity checks focus on direct customers
The proposed rule would require a permitted payment stablecoin issuer to establish a written, risk-based customer identification program. The program would form part of the issuer’s wider anti-money laundering and counterterrorist financing controls.
 An issuer would generally collect a customer’s name, address, date of birth or formation and identification number before opening an account. It would then use documentary or non-documentary methods to form a reasonable belief that it knows the customer’s identity.
Records containing the identification information would generally remain on file for five years after the account closes. Verification records would remain available for five years after their creation.
As previously reported, U.S. regulators proposed bank-style identification requirements for stablecoin issuers. The proposal follows the $GENIUS Act’s decision to treat permitted issuers as financial institutions under the Bank Secrecy Act.

A federal judge has allowed parts of an investor class-action lawsuit against Coinbase and certain executives to proceed, keeping allegations over risk disclosures alive in court.

US District Judge Katherine Polk Failla ruled on August 20 that some claims could move into discovery. The court dismissed several claims but allowed allegations that Coinbase misled investors by concealing potential bankruptcy risks and downplaying SEC scrutiny to proceed.

The ruling is procedural.

It does not mean Coinbase has been found liable. It does not prove wrongdoing. It means the plaintiffs cleared enough of an early legal hurdle for certain claims to continue.

A federal judge allowed parts of a Coinbase investor class action to proceed.

The claims center on risk disclosures tied to bankruptcy and SEC scrutiny.

The ruling does not decide liability.

Coinbase is one of the most important public companies in crypto.

Its disclosures, risk factors, regulatory statements, and investor communications are watched closely by both traditional markets and digital asset investors. A securities class action against the company therefore has broader relevance.

The case goes to a familiar question.

How much risk must crypto companies disclose, and how clearly must they explain regulatory uncertainty to investors?

That question has become more important as crypto firms operate in public markets, face agency scrutiny, and deal with fast-changing rules.
