Starmer steps down: What Andy Burnham means for crypto in the UK

Burnham brings a dose of optimism to the UK crypto industry, having previously supported the blockchain industry as mayor of Manchester.Amid waning poll numbers and pressure from inside the Labour Party, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stepped down. 

During Starmer’s tenure, the government introduced a moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political campaigns, citing concerns that crypto could become a vector for foreign influence in UK elections. Beyond the ban, the UK has charted a cautious path on crypto regulation under the Labour government. 

Starmer’s departure from Number 10 has started discussions about his successor. A frontrunner has emerged in Andy Burnham, a member of parliament for Makerfield and former Mayor of Greater Manchester. 

Burnham has expressed optimism about the blockchain industry’s ability to support economic development. But it remains to be seen whether that enthusiasm can translate into real policy moves.

Why is Crypto Crashing Hard Today? BTC, ETH and XRP Fall 5%



Crypto markets are in freefall on Monday, and for once the selling has nothing to do with anything specific to digital assets. Bitcoin fell to $62,400, down 4% on the day, Ethereum dropped 5.45% to $1,657 and XRP slid 4.36% to $1.09.

The total crypto market cap shed nearly $86 billion in 24 hours to sit at $2.14 trillion, with the Fear and Greed Index at 20 as selling accelerated across every major asset class simultaneously.

This is not a crypto story, it is a global liquidity story, and crypto is simply the most visible casualty.

South Korea Triggered a Circuit Breaker Again

The session’s most dramatic moment came from Seoul, where South Korea’s Kospi crashed 10% and triggered a circuit breaker for the second time this month. Samsung and SK Hynix both fell more than 12% after a local media report revealed that SK Hynix is slowing expansion of its newest AI memory chip and shifting focus to a lower-priced commodity-grade chip to cover a production shortfall.

Quarter-End Rebalancing Is Adding Pressure

JPMorgan warned this week that quarter-end rebalancing could force up to $165 billion in equity selling worldwide through June 30. Large pension funds and sovereign wealth funds are required to rebalance back to fixed stock-to-bond targets after a strong run in equities, and that mechanical selling is happening right now across global markets. The window does not close until the end of the month.

The Fed Is Not Helping

Nine of the Federal Reserve’s 19 policymakers are projecting at least one rate hike this year, and markets are now pricing a 70% probability of a hike by September. That single shift in expectations raises the cost of holding risk assets across the board. Crypto, which now shows a 97% correlation with the S&P 500, is feeling that repricing as direct

Crypto PAC's $5.5 million Congress pick gets Maryland win, more crypto allies advanceThe leading crypto political action committee, Fairshake, often backs its favored hopefuls for the U.S. House of Representatives with ad campaigns in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but it devoted Senate-level money — some $5.5 million — to Adrian Boafo, a Democrat who just won his party's nomination for a Maryland seat on Tuesday.

The state delegate's dominant victory records another success for the industry's super PAC and its affiliates after having notched a big primary election win with its $12 million devoted to Barry Moore's Alabama Senate bid last week.

Boafo's campaign website says he's looking to "provide responsible regulatory clarity for innovators building the next generation of financial tools," though it also included consumer-protection language often associated with crypto-resistance Democrats. Still, he has a record of pro-crypto legislative efforts in his state and favorably completed advocacy group Stand With Crypto's political questionnaire to earn that group's "A" rating.

The industry's support didn't go unnoticed. The open seat drew a massive number of Democratic candidates to replace outgoing Rep. Steny Hoyer, and Maryland's U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen bashed the "obscene amount of big special-interest money" Boafo received in the race.

In the same state, Fairshake backed incumbent Representative April McClain Delaney for $516,000, while also contributing ad spending in other states' Tuesday primaries to Republican incumbent Representative Blake Moore in Utah and $1.3 million for one of the industry's most reliable allies in the House, Representative Ritchie Torres, a New York Democrat. All of them also won their races or were winning, with McClain Delaney in an early lead with votes still being counted.
