Dogecoin remains one of the most recognizable names in crypto. For many investors, it represents the project that transformed internet culture into a global financial phenomenon.

But the market is changing.

As Dogecoin struggles to reclaim momentum in June 2026, investor attention is increasingly shifting toward projects connected to artificial intelligence and ecosystem utility. One of the names frequently appearing in those discussions is MemeToro ($MT), a new AI memecoin platform that combines AI agents, memecoin creation, staking, and prediction markets.

The comparison raises an interesting question: is MemeToro becoming the kind of opportunity Dogecoin once represented?

Dogecoin Is Fighting to Hold Investor Attention

Dogecoin has spent much of June under pressure.

The token recently fell below its multi-week psychological support level at $0.07 and is currently trading in a lower range around $0.067 to $0.072. This decline follows broader weakness across the crypto market as risk appetite remains constrained.

Market sentiment has not helped.

The Fear & Greed Index remains deeply embedded in Extreme Fear territory, creating a challenging environment for speculative assets. At the same time, blockchain data suggests that large Dogecoin holders have slowed accumulation activity.

Without strong buying pressure, the token has struggled to regain upward momentum.

The daily chart confirms an unambiguously bearish regime with $DOGE pinned at $0.08 below all key moving averages. Price sits beneath the converging 20-day and 50-day EMAs near $0.09, while the 200-day EMA looms at $0.11 — a 37% recovery away from current levels. That kind of distance from the long-term trend average does not signal a buying opportunity; it reflects a market that has lost its structural footing.

The daily RSI at 27.9 is technically oversold, hovering just below the 30 threshold that traders traditionally treat as a mean-reversion signal. However, oversold is not the same as bottomed. In sustained bear markets, RSI can grind along the 20–30 band for weeks while price continues to bleed. The reading tells us sellers are exhausted in the short term — it does not tell us buyers are stepping up.

Bollinger Bands on the daily are compressed tight around $0.08, with the midline, upper, and lower bands essentially coiled at the same value. That kind of squeeze can precede a sharp directional move in either direction. Given the current regime and broader macro context, however, the path of least resistance remains lower. Former BIS chief softens stance on stablecoins, backs coexistence with fiat
Agustín Carstens, former general manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and a member of the Global Finance & Technology Network's international advisory board, praised stablecoins for their ability to promote financial inclusion and innovation.

“I have come to appreciate what stablecoins can do to promote financial innovation, inclusion and to reduce costs,” said Carstens during a welcome address at Point Zero Forum on Tuesday. “We should try to establish conditions where we can live with fiat money and stablecoins.”

The remarks reflected a softer stance on stablecoins than Carstens took during his time at the BIS, when he was among the most prominent crypto critics. In a January 2022 speech, he said that stablecoins may not function as “sound money” because issuers have incentives to invest reserve assets in a “risky manner” to generate returns.

In one of his final speeches as BIS general manager in June 2025, Carstens also warned that stablecoins could emerge as a source of liquidity risk and still fell short of the three key tests money must fulfill to serve society.

While Carstens has taken a more favorable view of stablecoins, current BIS officials have remained critical of their role in the broader financial system.

Carstens’ successor and current BIS general manager, Pablo Hernández de Cos, said in April that the stablecoin market remains “small” and that its structural features constrain its ability to function as money.
