Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum Foundation will cut budget 40% in major reset


The Ethereum Foundation (EF) will slash its budget by roughly 40% this year as part of a shift toward a leaner, endowment-style operating model, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in a blog post published Tuesday.

The reduction comes on the same day the EF confirmed a 20% reduction in headcount and follows the resignation of co-Executive Director Hsiao-Wei Wang. Her departure brings the total number of senior Ethereum Foundation figures to leave since January to nine, underscoring the scale of the organization's ongoing turmoil.

Buterin said the spending cuts are aimed at transitioning the foundation from spending around 15% of its remaining treasury annually before 2026 to a long-term target of roughly 5% per year after 2030.

"I respect my EF colleagues far too much to pretend that there was not much that is lost," Buterin wrote, acknowledging that the cuts involve "difficult decisions" and the departure of experienced engineers who have worked on Ethereum for years.

The foundation is seeking to preserve funding for Ethereum's ambitious roadmap, which Buterin described as the protocol's "third iteration" after the Merge, while reducing costs elsewhere. Among the changes outlined were a wind-down of the Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) unit, smaller and less costly Devcon conferences, a narrower institutional strategy, and a shift toward more specialized client teams supported by AI-assisted formal verification.

Buterin also reiterated his preference for a "lean-and-done" future for Ethereum once its current roadmap is completed, with protocol development focused primarily on security fixes and limited high-impact upgrades rather than continual feature expansion.

LAB (LAB) is trading around $14.97, recording an estimated daily gain of 1.7% and an approximate market capitalization of $4.7 billion. The asset’s daily chart draws a sequence of higher highs and higher lows that have been steadily developing since early May.

Despite a sharp drop in the first days of the month that stripped billions from its total valuation, the price completed a retest of the resistance located at the 0.382 Fibonacci level near $19. Similarly, technical data confirms that the 0.618 Fibonacci level, situated in the $13 zone, is functioning as solid support to halt selling pressure.

Previously, the old resistance at $7 transitioned to support on two well-defined occasions during the sessions of early June and last June 11. According to momentum indicators, the RSI currently sits near 60 points and maintains a gradual ascent, although it has not yet entered formal overbought territory. Market analysts suggest that a daily close above the $19 threshold could open up room to target the upper bands of the technical indicator.

Recent market data appears to support this shift. According to CoinGecko, altcoin market capitalization has climbed to around $84.1 billion, while the Altcoin Season Index currently sits at 47, just below the 50 level that often signals broader altcoin dominance. Trading activity has also surged, with altcoin volume jumping more than 218% in the past 24 hours.

Altcoins Are Outperforming Bitcoin

Van de Poppe says current price action is not typical of a bear market. Michaël van de Poppe’s observations indicate that trends in crypto assets may be diverging from previous cycles.

“It’s already fascinating to see that there’s a change in appetite on altcoins versus six months ago,” he said.

Despite Bitcoin remaining weak, several altcoins have already reached yearly highs, while some have even posted new all-time highs.

“Those aren’t signals of a bear market to happen, those are signals of a bull market that’s starting up, although there’s just one asset staying behind: Bitcoin,” Van de Poppe explained.

He added that if concerns surrounding Strategy’s STRC situation ease, liquidity could flow back into crypto markets, leading to more altcoin breakouts. In this case, Michaël van de Poppe expects a stronger trend for mid-cap assets.

Bitcoin's $BTC$62,436.82 fall below $60,000 on June 5, its lowest level since late 2024, reflects a convergence of macroeconomic and structural pressures, according to Deutsche Bank (DB), which said $BTC is increasingly trading like an institutional risk asset rather than a retail-driven speculative bet.

The investment bank said bitcoin's renewed sell-off was driven by a hawkish shift in Federal Reserve expectations, sustained outflows from U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a confidence shock following Strategy's (MSTR) first $BTC sale since 2022, and a broader rotation of investor capital into artificial intelligence.

"Bitcoin is not disappearing; it is maturing into an institutional asset whose price is set by fund flows, Fed expectations, competing risk themes, and legislative outcomes," analyst Marion Laboure said in the Tuesday report.

$BTC has struggled in recent weeks, briefly falling below $60,000 on June 5 before rebounding to around $62,000-$63,000. Bitcoin remains more than 50% below its October 2025 record high, pressured by a hawkish shift in Federal Reserve expectations, persistent outflows from spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds and a broader pullback in risk appetite.

While investors may see signs of stabilization near current levels, some analysts say bitcoin's near-term direction will likely depend on whether institutional demand returns and macroeconomic conditions improve.

Deutsche Bank's economists now expect the Fed to raise interest rates twice in 2026, reversing earlier expectations that monetary policy would ease. The shift removes a key support that had underpinned institutional demand for bitcoin and other risk assets, the report said.
