Merging Crypto With Regional QR Systems

Cryptocurrency platform Kucoin announced on June 22 the expansion of its digital payment system into Argentina and Peru, integrating crypto and stablecoins directly into the regional networks that power everyday QR-code transactions. The move reflects an accelerating trend across South America, where inflation and limited banking access have driven consumers toward mobile-first digital wallets rather than traditional credit cards.

Under the new rollout, Kucoin Pay will plug into Argentina’s government-regulated Transferencias 3.0 system. The framework mandates that QR codes be interoperable, meaning a consumer can scan a single code at a merchant counter and pay using a variety of competing digital wallets, including the market-dominant Mercado Pago. In Peru, the system will connect with Yape and Plin, two mobile payment applications that have largely replaced cash for peer-to-peer and retail transactions across the country.

The integration represents a significant shift in how digital assets function in high-growth markets. While early cryptocurrency adoption focused heavily on speculative trading, local economic pressures have increasingly forced a pivot toward real-world utility.

“Real-world utility will define the next phase of crypto adoption, and payments are where this shift becomes most visible,” Alicia Kao, Managing Director of Kucoin, said in a statement. Kao added that the expansion aims to connect blockchain-based assets “with the banking and payment systems people already rely on.”

Challenge Secret Network's Axelar Bridge Drained $4.67M via Infinite-Mint FlawSecret Network's cross-chain bridge to Axelar has been suspended after an attacker exploited a years-old minting flaw to drain $4.67 million in wrapped tokens over seven undetected days.

Both teams disclosed the incident on June 19, confirming approximately $4.67 million in assets were taken from the bridge's Axelar-to-Secret IBC connection. The attack itself began on June 10 but went unnoticed for seven days until a routine cross-chain transfer failed because the bridge's escrow account had been depleted.

Minting Flaw

The vulnerability lived in a modified CW20-ICS20 smart contract deployed on Secret Network for the Axelar bridge connection. Security research firm Common Prefix published a technical breakdown of the incident, finding that two critical validation checks had been commented out from the contract's packet-receive function: one that should have verified incoming token denominations against the legitimate source channel, and one that should have capped outflows to amounts genuinely held in escrow.

The flaw dates to the contract's initial deployment in March 2023 and survived a migration on March 5, 2026 that updated the bytecode for new features but preserved the missing checks. Secret Network's default transaction encryption obscured the growing shortfall from on-chain observers; the attack ran for seven days before a failed transfer surfaced it.

Baillie Gifford, a 118-year-old fund manager overseeing approximately £286 billion, has launched the Enhanced Yield Fund, marketed under the ticker BAGEY. The fund entered into a partnership with custody giant BNY to launch BAGEY, which will run entirely on the blockchain.

The enhanced yield fund is now the UK’s first fully tokenized investment fund, and unlike most “tokenized” products that just slap a digital wrapper on a traditional structure, this one is supposed to live entirely onchain.

The fund is structured as a UK-regulated Open-Ended Investment Company denominated in dollars and invested in an actively managed portfolio of short-term corporate bonds.

According to the fund manager, BNY will handle tokenization and wallet plumbing, while NatWest Trustee and Depositary Services will handle depositary duties. Investors can expect a yield of around 7%. The fund is currently limited to qualified investors in the UK, Switzerland, and the Cayman Islands.

Grayscale Investments is tying bitcoin’s lag behind equities to a repricing of Federal Reserve policy, arguing that bitcoin could narrow the performance gap with stocks if the Fed holds off on rate hikes. In a June 22 research note, the crypto asset manager said changing rate expectations have contributed to the divergence between equities, bitcoin, and gold.

U.S. equities have gained 9% since the start of the Iran war in late February, supported in part by sustained spending tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure and development, Grayscale detailed. Over the same period, bitcoin has fallen 1%, while gold has dropped 20%, creating one of the widest performance gaps among major macro assets.

Grayscale Investments Head of Research Zach Pandl said:

“Our base case is for the Fed to hold off on rate hikes. If we’re right, bitcoin’s price may catch up with stocks.”

Investor expectations for monetary policy have shifted toward tighter conditions. One-year Fed rate expectations have risen by about 60 basis points since late February, and roughly half of Federal Reserve officials now indicate that rate increases could be warranted in 2026.

The Federal Open Market Committee voted 12-0 on June 17 to keep the federal funds rate at 3.5% to 3.75% in Kevin Warsh’s first policy meeting as Fed chair.
