The site, which spans roughly 1,300 acres along the St. Lawrence River, has been inactive since 2014 due to high energy costs and global competition that weakened US aluminum production.
From Smelter to Mining Hub
If finalized, NYDIG would convert the former industrial complex into a large-scale Bitcoin mining infrastructure site. The company has already been indirectly involved in operations at the location through its partnership with Coinmint, which has been hosting mining hardware on the campus since 2018 under a long-term lease agreement with Alcoa.
The site’s access to hydroelectric power from the New York Power Authority makes it particularly attractive for energy-intensive Bitcoin mining operations, offering both low-cost electricity and stable supply—two critical factors for large-scale mining profitability.
