Crypto longs lose $500 million as bitcoin slides to $78,000, SOL and XRP down 5%
Crypto bulls betting on higher prices nursed over $500 million in losses as bitcoin slipped to near $78,00 in Asian morning hours Saturday.

$BTC was down 3.2% over 24 hours, per CoinDesk data, reversing all gains from the past seven days where the asset briefly traded above $82,000.

Solana (SOL) dropped 5% to $86.98 and is now down 7% over the past seven days. XRP slid 4.3% to $1.41. Ether ($ETH) lost 3.3% to $2,189, with its weekly decline widening to 5.3%, the worst among the majors. BNB held up better, down 3.9% on the day but still up 1.1% over the past seven days. Dogecoin slipped 4.2% to $0.1095.

Bitcoin exchange supply falls to an 8-year low

The supply of Bitcoin ($BTC) on all cryptocurrency exchanges has declined to an 8-year low, amid notable demand from conviction investors.

As of May 15, Bitcoin’s supply on all crypto exchanges hovered around 5.623% of the asset’s total supply, according to analytics from Santiment, analyzed by Finbold. Consequently, approximately 1,180,830 $BTC, valued at about $95.2 billion at press time, sits on exchanges.

The notable decline in $BTC supply on all crypto exchanges can be attributed to significant demand from conviction buyers. Furthermore, this group of investors has added $BTC worth $243 billion year-to-date, bringing their total to nearly 4 million coins, as Finbold reported.

The low supply of the flagship coin on exchanges could imply a rising demand for self-custodial services. Furthermore, crypto exchanges are prone to several risks, including attacks and insolvency.

CME Group and ICE urged US regulators to scrutinize Hyperliquid for manipulation and sanctions risks on May 15.

CME and ICE warned that Hyperliquid’s anonymous, round-the-clock perpetual futures trading could distort global commodity benchmarks, particularly in oil markets. The exchanges also flagged risks of insider coordination and sanctions evasion by state-linked participants exploiting the platform’s permissionless structure.

Hyperliquid holds a market capitalisation of approximately $10.3 billion, making $HYPE the 13th-largest crypto asset globally. At its April 2025 peak, the platform accounted for roughly 70% of the on-chain perpetual futures market.

The pressure campaign comes as Hyperliquid has expanded into synthetic markets for stocks and commodities, placing it in direct competition with CME and ICE. Both exchanges operate under strict regulatory oversight that Hyperliquid currently does not face.

The Hyperliquid Policy Center argued the platform provides markets that are “more beneficial and present fewer risks than traditional centralised exchanges” and expects the CFTC to develop a tailored regulatory framework for on-chain derivatives platforms.

Hyperliquid launched the Policy Center in Washington in February 2026, selecting veteran crypto policy lawyer Jake Chervinsky to lead the organisation. The group has held direct meetings with the CFTC aimed at establishing a legal path for US retail participation.

The platform had positioned itself as a beneficiary of rising oil perps activity in early 2026, with open interest in oil-linked perpetual contracts surging as the Iran conflict disrupted global energy markets.

ETH Network Sees A Large Realized Profit Margin

After a brief price rebound, Ethereum has witnessed a surge in realized profits, indicating a shift in market dynamics. On Thursday, Santiment, a market intelligence and on-chain data analytics platform, reported that ETH registered its highest network realized profits in 3 weeks.

This may appear counterintuitive to see a spike of $74.58 million in realized profits because ETH’s price has fallen by 5.5% over the past 3 days. However, this trend is linked to investors’ behavior during the price action. ETH holders with a much lower cost basis are selling into the dip. 

While ETH traded below $2,000 throughout much of February and March, savvy traders accumulated despite war fears and heightened uncertainty in crypto at the time. Furthermore, wallets that were collected during those months are still profitable despite this mid-May downturn. Meanwhile, many have chosen to sell while they believe they still have a chance to make money.

Santiment also highlighted an increase in the volume of on-chain movement on the Ethereum blockchain. The 4-hour candles exhibit significant price compression at $2,241, indicating increased distribution activity on the chain. Historically, more transactions have led to more realized P&L events. When volume is increased, even little individual profits add up to significant network-level totals.

Based on current ETH trader behavior, Santiment noted that investors are leaning cautious. However, this does not mean new investors should be bearish. Rather, the platform suggests watching for deeper realized losses as a potential bottoming signal and avoiding aggressive positioning until the distribution phase shows clear signs of ending.
