Adam Back Pushes for Optional Upgrades to Quantum-Proof Bitcoin

The Blockstream CEO’s approach contrasts with BIP-361, a proposal that would implement mandatory freezes of quantum-vulnerable Bitcoin.

Blockstream CEO Adam Back advocated for optional quantum-resistant Bitcoin upgrades at Paris Blockchain Week on Wednesday, a day after a group of Bitcoin developers pushed for a mandatory freeze on quantum-vulnerable Bitcoin.

"Preparation is key. Making changes in a controlled way is far safer than reacting in a crisis," Back said at the conference. He also emphasized Bitcoin's proven emergency coordination capabilities, noting that "bugs have been identified and fixed within hours. When something becomes urgent, it focuses attention and drives consensus."

His approach contrasts with that of BIP-361, a proposal authored by Jameson Lopp and five other developers that would phase out quantum-vulnerable addresses over five years. The proposal, updated in Bitcoin's official repository on April 15 under the title "Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset," would implement a phased soft fork ultimately freezing coins that do not migrate—including the holdings of Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

The intervention highlights a deepening split among Bitcoin developers around how to address the looming threat of “Q-Day”—the moment when a quantum computer with sufficient power to break the encryption used by Bitcoin emerges. Recent research from Google and Caltech suggests quantum computers capable of breaking the cryptocurrency's security may arrive within years rather than decades.

The debate has been sharpened by accelerating progress in quantum computing. Google Quantum AI published research last month showing that quantum computers may break elliptic curve cryptography with fewer than 1,200 logical qubits.

Bitcoin rally is taking a breather near $75,000. Onchain data shows why



Bitcoin has climbed nearly 10% this month, but the rally is running into resistance near $75,000. The pause is notable as U.S. stocks push to record highs.

On-chain data shows holders are selling into strength, helping explain the slowdown.

It is evident from an on-chain indicator called realized profit/loss, which tracks the total dollar value of gains or losses locked in by holders when they move their coins on-chain. The indicator compares the current price at which coins are being moved with the price at which they last moved (the assumed acquisition cost), effectively showing whether investors are selling at a profit or a loss.

Values above 1 indicate increased profit-taking, and the 30-day exponential moving average (EMA) is currently well above that threshold. The EMA is used to smooth out day-to-day noise and highlight the broader trend in realized profits.

"Profit-taking activity is rising, with the 30D EMA of the Realized Profit/Loss Ratio at 1.16, indicating investors are selling into strength. A sustained move above $78.1K will require the market to absorb this overhead supply," the firm said in a report.

Profit-taking was particularly strong on Tuesday as Bitcoin briefly climbed toward $76,000 before quickly slipping back below $75,000. According to CryptoQuant, investors realized about $1.14 billion in profits during the move, one of the largest single-day readings this year.

The indicator, though widely tracked, has limitations, mainly that it assumes coins moving on-chain are being sold. In reality, they may simply be moving between wallets or exchanges for custody, rebalancing, or internal transfers.

Cryptocurrency analytics company Santiment has revealed the most active Layer-2 networks based on developer activity, using GitHub data from the past 30 days.

The data reveals that competition continues unabated, particularly among Ethereum scaling solutions, with Starknet and Aztec maintaining their top positions.

According to Santiment data, developer activity metrics reflect the technical progress of projects on GitHub and ecosystem growth, with leadership in this area considered a critical indicator of long-term fundamental strength.

Starknet ($STRK) maintained its top position with 117 points of developer activity, while the privacy-focused Layer-2 solution Aztec ($AZTEC) came in second with 116.27 points. Arbitrum ($ARB) retained its third-place position with 73.37 points.
