#Blockstream CEO Adam Back says efficient markets are finally repricing memecoins, smart contract tokens, and other "air tokens," and argues that most of these assets never had any genuine foundation for their valuations.
Back is the inventor of Hashcash and one of Bitcoin's most outspoken maximalists. He has held this view for years. His surprise, he noted, is not that a correction arrived but that it took this long.
No Cash Flows, No Demand, No Moat
Back made his case in posts on X on May 23 and 24, 2026.
buy bitcoin, hodl, repeat. i was expecting efficient market hypothesis to kick in with alts and price them at $0. but i was making that call a decade ago, so l am quite surprised it took this long for the efficient market to catch-up with air tokens, altcoins, memecoins etc.
His argument rests on three absences. The tokens he targets produce no cash flows for holders and attract no meaningful blockspace demand. They hold no sustainable competitive advantages over alternatives. Without any of these, he contends, there is no rational basis for a price above zero.
In Back's framing, the process is already underway. He has been making this call since at least the previous market cycle. The current repricing is a correction toward what he always viewed as the inevitable outcome.
The surrounding market context underlines his point. Bitcoin (BTC) had dropped to a four-week price low after the Clarity Act vote was delayed. The asset then rebounded sharply after the US-Iran war end triggered a broad rally. As this week's crypto overview shows, altcoins failed to sustain any meaningful gains from the same catalyst.
Bitcoin absorbed the macro tailwind. Most alternatives did not.

Compared to the early days of May, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization is not as strong. The value of the global cryptocurrency market was $2.56 trillion at the time of publication.

At the same time, the market cap of altcoin was $1.097 trillion.


However, the CoinMarketCap altcoin index was at 38 at the time of writing, indicating that the altcoin season has little room to occur because the Bitcoin [BTC] season is still going strong. 

Zooming out, however, shows that the cryptocurrency market is in a bullish zone because Bitcoin has returned above the $75,000 price level.

The listed addresses hold an estimated 3.7 million BTC, valued at about $285 billion, according to Sani, the founder of Bitcoin onchain analytics platform Timechain Index.

The founder also noted that most of the old Satoshi-era tokens are currently sitting in Pay-to-Public-Key (P2PK) output formats, while the plaintiffs only sent legal notices to the corresponding hashed public key under Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash (P2PKH) formats, which often hold no value.

This could undermine the claim that proper notice of abandonment was given to the holder, since plaintiffs sent the legal notices to the empty P2PKH addresses, while the actual BTC balance sits in unnotified P2PK scripts.

Castle Labs' lead research analyst agreed, adding that the messaging attempt was “structurally defective” because it was sent to the address formats no longer used by the targeted wallets. Sending a small transaction via the OP_RETURN function would be “similarly ineffective” as it only works with active recipients monitoring their wallets.The over 39,000 wallets named in the lawsuit hold Bitcoin that are considered dormant, or lost, meaning that they haven’t been circulating onchain for multiple years.There are currently 3.5 million Bitcoin, worth about $271 billion, that have been dormant for the past 10 years and another 6.6 million coins, worth around $577 billion, that have been dormant for over five years, Bitbo data shows.

The daily chart is bearish across every EMA. Price sits below the 20 EMA at $0.00000592, the 50 EMA at $0.00000604, the 100 EMA at $0.00000630, and the 200 EMA at $0.00000732. The Parabolic SAR dot at $0.00000606 sits above price, confirming the downtrend is still active.

The resistance zone between $0.00000660 and $0.00000680 rejected $SHIB twice in May. That level lines up with the 100 EMA, making it a double ceiling bulls need to clear before any recovery gets traction. The current bounce off $0.00000554 lows looks fragile without a volume catalyst behind it.

$SHIB Burn Rate Dropped 80% in 7 Days: What That Means for Price?
Burn activity tells a similar story. The 7-day burn chart shows a massive spike on May 19, with burns briefly touching 21 million $SHIB in a single session. By May 24, that number had collapsed to roughly 2 million, a 79.96% weekly decline. The 24-hour burn rate is down another 58.32%, with the most recent burns totaling under 2 million $SHIB across three transactions.

At this burn pace, supply reduction pressure is negligible. The May 19 event looks like an isolated spike rather than a trend, which removes one of $SHIB’s few bullish catalysts from the equation right now.
