The United States has seized approximately $1 billion in Iranian cryptocurrency assets, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced during a speech at the Reagan National Economic Forum. Bessent stated that authorities had outright grabbed the wallets linked to the Iranian regime, noting that some of the wallet owners may not even realize their funds are gone yet. The operation is part of a broader US financial pressure campaign against Iran known as Operation Economic Fury, which was launched in March 2025. This coordinated effort targets Iranian assets on multiple fronts, including freezing bank accounts and collaborating with European allies to confiscate physical properties and villas.

According to Bessent, the pressure campaign, combined with recent military actions, has severely strained Iran's financial system. He detailed that the regime had previously been siphoning between $400 million and $500 million a month to distribute among roughly 80 leaders before US intervention. Currently, the country is facing extreme economic distress, with inflation likely exceeding 200%, widespread internet shutdowns, the distribution of food vouchers, and nearly half of Iranian troops going unpaid. The newly disclosed $1 billion figure marks a significant escalation, doubling the $500 million in seized Iranian crypto assets announced by the Treasury Department in late April.

In response to tightening financial restrictions, Iran has reportedly been exploring alternative revenue models. Among these is a plan to monetize control of the Strait of Hormuz using a Bitcoin-based digital marine insurance platform called "Hormuz Safe." A state document cited by the Fars News Agency, which is closely affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, suggests the initiative could generate over $10 billion in revenue by requiring certain transit ships to pay tariffs in Bitcoin.

Wall Street’s trillion-dollar dilemma: Why AI-powered hackers are keeping big banks off the blockchain



Traditional financial institutions are preparing to move trillions of dollars of assets onchain, but the risk of hacks and exploits is putting them off, according to blockchain security firm CertiK's CEO Ronghui Gu.

"Right now, more and more institutions are trying to move assets onchain," Gu told CoinDesk in an interview. "They imagine that, let's say in 10 years, multiple trillion dollars — even tens of trillions of dollars — of assets are going to move onchain."

The potentially massive migration of financial assets is hitting a wall because, although bankers and legacy institutions want to capture the efficiency of decentralized ledgers, the current operational reality is still too risky for conservative capital allocators.
