Чтобы биткоин работал без единого управляющего, то есть чтобы функционировала его распределенная сеть, кто-то должен подтверждать транзакции и записывать их блоками в реестр операций — блокчейн (blockchain, «цепочка блоков»). Этим занимаются майнеры. Но сеть не доверяет им автоматически. Чтобы получить право добавить блок в цепочку, майнер должен выиграть своеобразную вычислительную лотерею.

Смысл этой лотереи — подобрать такое число, чтобы итоговый «отпечаток» (хэш) блока соответствовал условию, заданному криптографическим алгоритмом SHA-256. Поскольку каждый набор данных дает только один хэш, остается лишь подбирать новые варианты, пока не найдется подходящий.

Хэш — это последовательность символов, полученная в результате криптографического преобразования данных из блока по заданному алгоритму. Он представляет собой уникальный цифровой отпечаток. Для одного и того же набора данных всегда получается один хэш, но заранее предсказать его невозможно. Именно эта логика защиты с помощью криптографии лежит в основе самого понятия «криптовалюта».

Майнеры берут «заготовку» блока — набор данных о транзакциях в нем, ссылку на предыдущий блок и случайное число — и перебирают параметры, пока не получат соответствующий хэш, удовлетворяющий условию криптографического алгоритма. Кто первым находит такой вариант, получает награду в виде новых биткоинов. Этот механизм защищает сеть и гарантирует, что новые блоки появляются честным путем.

Каждую секунду миллионы устройств по всему миру пробуют варианты. Это похоже на угадывание пароля, когда компьютер подставляет числа, считает результат, проверяет и так по кругу. Среднее число попыток до успеха — и есть та самая «сложность» (difficulty). Сейчас это десятки триллионов попыток на каждый найденный блок.

Сложность майнинга автоматически подстраивается, чтобы новые блоки появлялись примерно каждые 10 минут вне зависимости от того, сколько устройств участвует в вычислениях. Поэтому со временем задачи усложняются, и для участия в майнинге уже недостаточно обычного компьютера, как это было при появлении биткоина. Нужны мощные устройства, специально созданные для майнинга (ASIC, Application-Specific Integrated Circuit), способные выполнять триллионы вычислений в секунду.

Совокупная вычислительная мощность всех устройств в сети, показывающая, сколько попыток они совершают в секунду при поиске подходящего хэша, называется хэшрейт. Наряду со сложностью это один из ключевых показателей безопасности и активности сети биткоина. Чем он выше, тем труднее провести атаку и тем надежнее работает система. Сегодня хэшрейт достиг таких значений, что успешная манипуляция данными у биткоина практически исключена. Теоретически с этим могли бы справиться только квантовые компьютеры, которых пока не существует даже в зачаточном виде.

Весь процесс как концепция называется доказательством работы (proof-of-work). Чтобы записать в цепочку блок, нужно реально потратить вычислительные ресурсы. Это делает добавление новых блоков дорогим и трудоемким, а значит заслуживающим доверия.
