CME Launches Single-Stock Futures on Over 50 Leading U.S. Companies, and Its Cryptocurrency Derivatives Division Continues to Grow
CME Group has launched futures contracts on individual stocks of more than 50 leading U.S. companies, marking a significant expansion of its equity derivatives offerings. A total of 77 contracts are now available, comprising 55 standard-sized futures (each representing 100 shares) and 22 micro-sized contracts (each for 10 shares). The lineup includes mega-cap tech firms like Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla, recently public SpaceX, as well as major names such as Micron, Pfizer, and Walmart. These cash-settled contracts feature a quarterly expiration cycle, similar to CME's existing equity index futures.
Tim McCourt, CME's Global Head of Equities, FX, and Alternative Products, stated the launch responds to client demand for more precise single-stock risk management and the capital efficiency benefits of a centralized marketplace. He noted the products aim to broaden CME's client base beyond traditional institutional investors, with the group partnering with over 35 retail brokers for distribution.
Trading will occur nearly 23 hours a day, five days a week on CME Globex, far exceeding standard U.S. equity trading hours. While this allows traders to react to news around the clock, officials warn of potential liquidity risks and volatility during overnight sessions, echoing concerns seen in CME's 24/7 crypto markets.
Notably, the new contracts, which exclude any crypto tokens, leverage the cash-settled, margined infrastructure CME has honed through its cryptocurrency derivatives business. That division continues to grow; CME launched round-the-clock Bitcoin and Ether futures and options in late May 2024 and has since added futures on crypto indices tracking Bitcoin, Solana, and XRP, with Bitcoin volatility futures planned. However, activity in CME's core Bitcoin futures has cooled from recent peaks, with open interest hitting a 14-month low in April amid reduced yields and trading volumes.
