1. What Is Sonic? Sonic is a high-performance, fully EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain upgraded from the former Fantom ecosystem. The Sonic mainnet launched in December 2024, and its native token S succeeds FTM at a 1:1 ratio. S is used for transaction fees, validator staking, network governance, and ecosystem incentives, with the network focused on high-throughput, low-latency on-chain finance and applications. 2. How Does Sonic Work? Sonic uses Proof-of-Stake and asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus to achieve sub-second finality, with validators staking S to participate in block production and network security. The Sonic Gateway handles native asset transfers to and from Ethereum and includes a fast lane and fail-safe mechanisms. Fee Monetization allows registered applications to earn 90% of the network fees they generate, with the remainder going to validators or network mechanisms—directly incentivizing developers to bring in users and transaction activity. 3. Who Founded Sonic? Sonic is driven by Sonic Labs and the Sonic Foundation, with its technical and organizational foundation coming from the former Fantom team. Michael Kong, Andre Cronje, and David Richardson previously led core work on the network and the Sonic Gateway. In June 2026, the three stepped down from the board and completed a handover of responsibilities, subsequently supporting the project in an advisory capacity. Matt Visser took over as CEO, and Kosta Kourkoumelis became COO. In May 2024, the Fantom Foundation completed a USD 10 million strategic financing round to support the Sonic Foundation and ecosystem development. In May 2025, Sonic Labs secured a further USD 10 million investment through a strategic sale of S tokens. 4. Sonic Tokenomics The native token S had an initial supply of approximately 3.175 billion tokens, consistent with the FTM supply at the time of migration. The current official page shows a total supply of approximately 3.8 billion tokens. Governance has approved new issuance for ecosystem airdrops, ongoing development, and institutional expansion, including an airdrop program totaling 190.5 million tokens and a development program that may issue 47.625 million tokens per year over six years, with any unused portion burned per the rules. For the network's first four years, validator rewards will primarily draw on the existing rewards reserve, after which block rewards are planned to be issued at approximately 1.75% annually. Early-claim slashing on airdrops and unused development funds constitute two types of burn mechanisms. 5. Timeline of Key Milestones March 2024: The plan for the new Sonic network is announced. December 18, 2024: The Sonic mainnet launches, and FTM begins upgrading to S at a 1:1 ratio. March 2025: Two-way conversion ends, after which only the FTM-to-S upgrade remains. 2025: Issuance related to airdrops, development funds, and institutional expansion begins. April 2026: The main network migration and infrastructure updates are completed. June 2026: Sonic Labs completes its board and management handover, and Matt Visser takes over as CEO.
